Andrea,
Do you have a 'deal' for annual maintenance renewal?
I just renewed mine but wouldn't mind paying for next year at a
discount...<g>

Paul,
<g> Unfortunately no, sorry :-(
Friedrich is not a big fan of "special discounts". A "conference special"
(e.g. Cambridge Conference) is another story, but I think I can say that
Friedrich really hates "special offers".
The Anniversary Special (to celebrate the first SetupBuilder Version 5
anniversary) was my idea and I was only allowed to make a "SetupBuilder for
Clarion" and "SetupBuilder Developer Edition" with 6-month subscription
offer. Friedrich believes that, whenever a special discount is introduced,
existing and long standing customers are at a disadvantage. I convinced him
this is not the case for the above two offers.
While our Anniversary Special was a great success, I don't think we'll see a
Lindersoft special anytime soon. Perhaps this was the one and only special
ever. What should I say...Friedrich is the boss.

Can you explain how the web update works.
What kind of server does the vendor need?
Thanks,
George Riddell.

George,
SetupBuilder Web Update provides an easy and royalty-free way to simply add
live Internet version updating to any program.
There are two cycles of tasks that you perform when using Web Update to
perform periodic updates over the Internet: Initial Deployment and Web
Update Deployment. Once you have performed the Initial Deployment steps for
your application, each time you want to distribute an update of that
application to your customers, you perform the Web Update Deployment cycle
of steps.
1. Initial Deployment
This gives your software the ability to check a specified location on the
Internet for updates. When you use Web Update for the first time, you are
just preparing your current software for future updates.
2. Web Update Deployment
If you have a new version for an existing web update enabled application
available, you create a Web Installer Update Package. You can use all
SetupBuilder functions in an Update Package. Of course, you can also use
binary patching (delta updates).
You can use the Auto Update Generator to automate this process. We are
using this feature to generate our own web updates for SetupBuilder. It
takes only 30 seconds to build web updates for our Professional and
Developer Edition product line (can update all released SetupBuilder 5
versions).
Once the application on the client machine determines a new update is
available, the update is downloaded and applied.
The web installer will also detect which files you need to have updated and
only downloads those that are out-of-date. Because a web installation
downloads only the pieces they need, you shorten their download time, and
reduce your web server load at the same time.
BTW, you only need a simple HTTP 1.1 compatible web server (e.g. Apache,
etc.).
Please contact me if I can be of additional assistance.

Andrea,
This sounds very good. But, like many developers, I pay for websites
somewhere on our planet. They have cPanel and use the LAMP stack. Can
web update operate from these platforms. These are Linux machines.
I suspect SetupBuilder needs a MS Server. Initial deployment and update
deployment are simple ideas that any developer can grasp. It is the
platform needed that is the mystery.
The phrase "BTW, you only need a simple HTTP 1.1 compatible web server
(e.g. Apache, etc.)." is what I would like you to expand upon.
Thanks,
George Riddell.

Pardon me for jumping in. No, you do NOT need a MS Server ;-) And Linux is
no problem. We are running FreeBSD UNIX operating system on our own
servers.
But of course, if you like, you can use a MS Server to power SetupBuilder
web update ;-) IIS is no problem.

If you already have a web server to host your web site, then you have a
HTTP 1.x server. Even AOL supports this by default <g>. Quite a few
of our customers have a $2.95/month server to power their live updates.
You upload the files via FTP to your web server and web update communicates
via HTTP with your web server. Again, no Windows server is required!
If you have any further questions, please ask. I am here to help :)

Thanks for the explanation. Very simple indeed. You may want to
include these facts on your web pages. How it functions is not fully
described.

A thrilled customer. I've just read the introduction and my brain is
burning with possibilities. I've not used it yet, but Friedrich is a
long time participant in these groups and all I've ever heard is praise.
I also know local developers that swear by it. I'm replacing INNO,
which has served me very well, but it is time to crank up the volume a
couple of notches.
Thanks,
George Riddell

Hi George,
Yes, I fully agree. We are already working on a new web site and we are
continuously working on improvements to our manual.
BTW, we'll make white papers, videos (thanks to Geoff Spillane) and other
resources available in the future.
Thanks,
Friedrich
