View Full Version : DEP stops SetupBuilder executables

Hello,
We are noticing in the last 5 days that SetupBuilder installables are not
installing and failing because of DEP.
We are also noticing it is not just SetupBuilder, but InstallShield (For
something like Sybase SQL Anywhere 9.02) also failing.
This is on XP SP2 and WIN20003 SP1.
Any reason why install packages are failing because of DEP? Any way to
correct the issue? It causes support calls and people are unable to use
our products (even as demos) without calling our sales office, where we have
to tell them to turn off DEP in order to install our product.

Hi Robert,

Any chance you could fill us, who are clueless, in on what DEP is?

DEP (Data Execution Prevention) has been a part of XP since SP2.
Some CPUs support it, some dont. AMD64 processors do, so owners of those
have been "benefiting" from this for some time.

Hello,
Yes --- it seems that Microsoft added another key to the castle, causing
everyone more and more grief. Pretty soon we'll need to shut-off all their
silly shit so we can actuall use our computers. Right now, it looks like
both InstallShield and SetupBuilder use/access/touch something somewhere
which triggers DEP and causes the program to not run.
Attached is a screen shot from a DEP Message in a Setup Builder Execuable of
our product.

Hello,
I think we have a solution available now. We'll test it a few more hours
here in-house and then make a test build available.

Odd, I have never seen that error message before. Until this thread.
But as long as 6% of survey respondents say they don't use any anti-virus
tools, I think MS is correct is adding this. Or they'll get hell if they
don't. Or if they do.

Not all CPUs support it, as I recall.
