View Full Version : Error: 0001:000-4 problem

Hi Friedrich,

When I would try to update Setupbuilder 6 Developer, I would get this error:

"This application has encountered a problem and needs to close."
Error#: 0001:000-4

So I uninstalled and downloaded the latest version. I get the same error
when I try to install, and the install closes.
What to do?

Your virus scanner blocks the SetupBuilder application. BTW, if you are
running Kaspersky Internet Security Suite, report this to Kaspersky.

Error 0001:000-4

Cause: The installation "stub" loader was unable to create temporary runtime
files in the temporary Windows folder.

Solution: The most likely cause is because of too high of a security level
on your box. Please try again under administrator or disable your virus
protection during this installation.

Does this help?

Friedrich,

Out of curiosity, as you specifically mentioned KIS, has this occurred with
other programs like this (monitoring)?
Or is KIS overly aggressive?

Thanks again,
Ben Morehouse

I think during the last few weeks, Kaspersky Internet Security Suite became
"over-protective" and causes problems with all kind of installation
applications (not only SetupBuilder). We had three KIS reports during the
last four weeks, that's why I mentioned KIS here. Okay, SetupBuilder is
doing million of installations per month, so three reports seems to be
marginal. But in all these reports, KIS protected the machines.

The problem is that there is nothing we (or you) can do except reporting it
to Kaspersky. Under certain circumstances, KIS simply "blocks" execution of
the installer application and the program has to terminate :-(

Thanks,

I changed my settings to make it work, but I will report it to Kaspersky as
well.

Thank you, Ben!

Just curious, what did you change in your KIS settings to make it work?

Thanks again,
Friedrich

I disabled it to install, then added wupdate.exe and wucheck.exe to "Trusted
Applications" to make the updates work.
I could have added the setup exe also, but it incudes the version in the
name and is always different, so it would be a waste of time.
It never used to block the install, so they must have changed something.
I would disable the application monitoring altogether, except I like to see
how it affects my own apps.

Hi Ben,

IMNSHO anyone who is using Kaspersky products is skating on thin ice. I
heard good things about them and started using their virus program back in
version 5. Unfortunately they had decided to use additional data streams so
every file that Kaspersky ever touched got an added data stream to it. When
they upgraded to version 6, they decided to get rid of the ADS. They did
not tell anyone so imagine my surprise when one of my computers, with not
very many files on it took 16 hours to scan after installing version 6!
After some investigation and postings on their forum (with useless
responses) I realized what was going on. I removed Kaspersky from all my
computers and got software that removes ADS. It took me literally DAYS of
downtime to get rid of it and since then I will NEVER use anything that
comes from those guys.

Best regards,

Hi Arnor,

After hearing that, I'm glad I started on v6.
It does offer excellent protection though, even though KIS is a bit
intrusive compared to KAV.
When my subscription is getting close to up, I will definitely research
alternatives. I would go back to the regular av version, but I'm working on
a shareware app to release soon, and want to see how they act together. Alot
of people use it and I want to minimize the annoying popups from the program
monitoring. I'm having a problem with a certain 3rd party template that
creates .bat files on the fly in the background. Each time one is created I
get a message that it has been placed in "group low restricted" PITA.
Working on a workaround...

Thanks for the info!

Hi Ben,

> After hearing that, I'm glad I started on v6.

I still haven't completely removed the ADS from my development computer,
mostly because it has >1M files on it and the estimated time to remove it is
about 36 hours! Which was what triggered my suspicion when I tried
upgrading to 6 because it _removed_ the ADS and it was showing me an
estimate of 56 hours to do the first scan!

Personally I use the windows firewall and the firewall in my router. For
anti-virus I have used the free AVG and also f-prot. We don't use any of
the most targeted software such as outlook express for either email or
newsgoups and we are reasonably careful about what files we open.
Executable files are not among those<bg>
