View Full Version : How does Uploading Files (FTP) work?

Hello,
How does uploading files work in SetupBuilder?
Do you upload as a temp file, finish the upload, and then rename it to the
actual file name.
-or-
Do you upload the file as the real file name from the beginning?
Our update file server gets hit heavy serving 4,000 users and the file is
45meg...so...it is best to:
a) upload as temp file name (not distubing users)
b) delete old file
c) rename temp as real file name (1 second)
Just checking -- doing it above will only disturbe the file server for 1
second versus 5 minutes??
Just wondering.

Robert,
I have the same pb and opted for a manual update like this I am sure _I_ am master of all this
I know Friedrich has a very specific methodology for SB in this respect as he mentioned it some time back.... ;)

Robert,
It does a "real file name" upload. So if you always replace an existing
file, I would not use. It's not a problem if your setup file names are
"unique" (e.g. you have a build number in your setup name).

Hello,
Well ... I think you may want to reevaluate it. It also causes an issue
with aborted file transfers too!
Usually file uploads take 10 minutes or 5 minutes or whatever. A user can
be downloading the update at that time.
When I do ALL my FTP uploads to our vendors in roomMaster, I do this:
1. Create a temp file name (unique like TIME stamp)
2. Upload the file
3. Rename the temp file to the actual file name

Hi Robert,
It should not be a problem to add this. It will be added to the wish list
for SB7.
Thank you for your suggestion.

Some ftp servers do that anyway (regardless of what the client does)

Robert,
Added to SB7. SetupBuilder 7 uploads all files to a temporary name on the
server and then renames the file(s) at the end of the upload process.
Thanks again for your suggestion.

Hello,
Thanks ... it makes more sense for us with regards to:
a) aborted transfers
b) conflicts with uploading

Hello,
I hope there is no more updates or changes to SetupBuilder and you end
development.
This way, you can go work for Soft Velocity!!!!
