Lookup shortcut key

[NewsArchive]

I believe there is a shortcut to be able to look up Variables whilst on (for
example ) a File Rename dialog.

1. What is that shortcut?
2. Where do I find this in the help/doc?

Now you just *know* that I've got a suggestion that it should be elsewhere
too, right?

I found that impossible to find, and I kinda knew what I was looking for

So references to it or links to it on dialogs like Rename would be
useful....

See attached screenshots. Full text search is supported. And you can even
print the whole manual.

Well, you knew what you was looking for. You tried to find the shortcut to
be able to look up Runtime Variables, right? So (IMO) it is logical to
check the documentation for Runtime Variables.

AND, Lindersoft makes it VERY easy to download the latest PDF and CHM
versions (Check for documentation updates) - great touch!

BTW, I prefer my Steve screenshot (steve3.gif), but, then again, that's
just me! :-D

Actually, I was making a jest of using a certain PDF viewer vs the
"standard". Kinda like poking fun at MS vs the competition... :-D

Look at the thread title... do you see Runtime Variable there.... no? so I
was not looking for that (in my mind)

In my mind I was interested in how to LOOKUP variables..... so guess what I
searched for.?

So you see, putting something only in a place that is logical to you,
doesn't cover it, imo.

But we've been here before - you and I have very different ideas on what an
index should do.... forget it...

I am always open to suggestions and new ideas. We'll add "Variables
(Runtime)" and "Variables (Compiler)" to the index. And we will even add
"LOOKUP runtime variables" and "LOOKUP compiler variables". Thank you for

Suggestion: Using Ctrl-Right click can be tricky when positioning the
cursor just right. What I have in Build Automator is Ctrl-Down arrow. That
makes it very easy to place the cursor, press Ctrl-Down and up pops the
variable selection window. This way it is much easier to make sure that the
variable is inserted between the "" or whatever else you need to put it.

As I said... in the index under "hotkeys" ;-)

It doesn't include the Ctrl+Right-click (nor, obviously, the new shortcut)
hence my "slightly incomplete" description.

Since Friedrich is in the mood to accept suggestions <g> - may I ask WHY
have a hotkey at all?

Hotkeys are very DOS-ey, don't you think?... having to remember all those
mickey-mouse codes, different with each app, etc, etc

The Windows standard method is a lookup BUTTON - so may I suggest we have a
lookup *button* to access the popup of relevant variables

Simple:

1. Convenience - it is easier to use the keyboard than a mouse.
2. Speed - it is easier to use the keyboard than a mouse.

It simply boils down to the time it takes to navigate and click the mouse.
Once you get very proficient with software the mouse slows you down.

Not always faster (tho' sometimes true)...

e.g.in this case:-

* you're in SB, and you've just used THE MOUSE to get at a function in the
RH column (eg Rename)
* the dialog pops up .... cursor is already in the source field... so you
just click the 'lookup' button!

That one click *cannot* be slower than a Ctrl-Key + R-click!

I say "lose the Ctrl-key"!
But I suppose I *should* say "add the Lookup" which can please both. <g>

Didn't do that Russ - put your reading glasses on or take the time to read
properly.
