View Full Version : SB third party installs on Win7 Ultimate 64 bit
NewsArchive

Hi Friedrich,
One of my customers is trying to install some of our third party tools on a
Win7 Ultimate 64 bit machine. Everyting works fine on Win7 32bit, but on
64bit he gets ALL the clarion versions grayed out - see attached screenshot.
The "Clarion Environment Detection" is set up as shown in the attached
screenshot. I'm using SB 6.9 2587.
Any ideas?
Best regards,

Hi Arnór,
Does he really have Clarion 6 on a 64-bit machine? He can't use it, so are
you sure he installed it?
Or does he have Clarion 7 installed?

By the way, I see the following when I start the LSZip installer on Vista
Ultimate 64-bit.
Only Clarion 7 is installed, the installer also supports C4, C5, and C6.

He had C7 Gold installed and apparently installed one of our products. Then
he updated to C7 Gold-2 and now when he went to install some more products,
he gets this on ALL our installs. I even sent him one install to make sure
that it was compiled with the latest SB update. He rebooted, same thing.
He gets the screen with all the listed Clarion installs and one extra radio
button with no text on it.
Anything we can send to you to test?

Arnor,
Friedrich is not available at the moment. Would it be possible to send him
one of the installers that fails on your customer`s machine? He will check
it when he is back.

I sent him an email with the download info for one of the installers. I
don't have win7 installed myself so I will also try that but will probably
not get to that until this weekend. I have a feeling that this is an
isolated case.

Friedrich,
Aren't you forgetting one point about Clarion 7 and Clarion 6 on 64 bit
machines?
No, you can't use C6 16 bit IDE, but you can use C6 32 bit compilers,
so for example, if someone wanted to use C7 IDE to maintain a C6 project
(using C7 multiple version support) -
yes, you would install C6 on 64 bit machine, and let C7 multiple version
support use the C6 32 bit compilers.

Only Clarion 7 is installed on this machine. Various installs, both ours
and CapeSoft show all checked Clarion versions present and all disabled.
Friedrich has one of my installs to test with that is compiled with the
latest SB6.9 build so I hope he can figure something out:)

Arnor,
I realize that your problem is SB related, and my point is a side
discussion, but I believe a valid point.
Friedrich's remark

Other developers have discussed installing Clarion 6 on 64 bit machines,
utilizing the C6 32 bit compiler (BUT, of course, NOT the C6 16 bit IDE)
for C7 multiple version support use.
The Clarion 7 program will register the Clarion 6 templates in this special
file - TemplateRegistry.trf
So, that is a point to consider in development for Clarion Third Party
install programs.

This got me thinking as I had installed C6 on my Vista 64. So I tried my
install there and I get exactly the same results as my customer on Win7 64.
I.e. I get C5.5, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 7.0 listed and they are all
disabled.
I checked the win.ini and it has no information about C6 there - no big
surprise as the C6 install doesn't update the win.ini.

Hmm, I can't reproduce this :-( I installed C6 and C7 on a fresh Windows
Vista Ultimate 64-bit and only see the "Clarion 7" option in your installer
(see attached screenshot).
There must be a magic thing that causes this. Any idea?

Bingo. I uninstalled C7, so only C6 is on that x64 machine. I see the
problem in your installer -- the LSZip installer works okay (see attached
screenshots). I'll try to find out what is going on.

I created a simple project and it worked as expected. So I need your .sb6
project to find out what might cause this. Could you please provide me with
the original project file for the installer that you already sent?

I just tested this install on Vista Home Premium 64bit where I had Clarion 6
installed - no Clarion 7 or any other clarion.
I get the same results as my client gets on Win7 64bit - i.e. Clarion 5.5,
6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 7.0 are all listed and all disabled.

IMO, you have removed the text resource in the "Search for Supported Clarion
Version" field.
The last radio button is not disabled in your case -- but it does not have
any text in your installation. It should display "Search for Supported
Clarion Version". If the user selects this last radio button, then the
"Change..." button is enabled. The user selects the Clarion directory and
then SetupBuilder detects the (supported) Clarion version (see attached
screenshots).

The problem is that it is not picking up Clarion 7 which is installed.

Hi Arnór,

No, because the original "Clarion 6" installation is not UAC-aware. And the
"Clarion 6 UAC Installation Fix Version 1.20" (c6_vista_fix.exe) cannot be
used on x64. In other words, Clarion detection will always fail on a x64
UAC-aware system.

On x64, your customer has to select the "Search for Supported Clarion
Version" option and then select the Clarion folder. The installer will then
do the rest.
Does this help?

I can understand that for C6 and older, but please note that my customer had
__only Clarion 7__ installed. Are you saying that SB can't detect C7 under

C7 should not be a problem (see attached LSZip installer screenshot, Vista
64 Ultimate).
Friedrich
NewsArchive

Hi Friedrich,
> C7 should not be a problem (see attached LSZip installer screenshot, Vista
> 64 Ultimate).
Please go back to my original message. The problem IS that it is not
detecting and enabling the Clarion 7 option. It is showing ALL the
available options disabled, except the one to pick a version. It should IMO
enable Clarion 7, but it does not. _THAT_ is the problem.
I also don't think it should list all the options when they are not
installed and it can't find them, i.e. it should ONLY list Clarion 7 and the
option to search, not C5.5, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3.
Please see the screenshot I posted with my first post. Ignore that it's
missing the text for picking the clarion version - no idea about that, looks
like it didn't get added when I checked the checkbox. That is not relevant.
What _is_ relevant is:
1. The Clarion 7 option is NOT being enabled when C7 IS installed.
2. The C5.5, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3 options are being shown when they should
not since none of them are installed or can be found.
In this case it should only show:
[] Clarion 7
[] Search for Supported Clarion versions
Hope this makes it clearer, sorry the missing text got us sidetracked;)

Also, on my Vista64, ONLY Clarion 6.3 is installed, not Clarion 7 or any
other version. But since the win.ini hasn't been updated, SB can't detect
C6.3. In this case IMO it should only show:
[] Search for Supported Clarion versions
Since it can't find any versions installed. But it shows:
[] Clarion 7
[] Clarion 6.3
[] Clarion 6.2
[] Clarion 6.1
[] Clarion 6.0
[] Clarion 5.5
[] Search for Supported Clarion versions
I.e. it lists all the options available and all but the last one is
disabled.

But exactly this is the idea behind that feature! The installer does not
detect any valid version and so displays all supported Clarion versions (all
radio buttons disabled). The user has to select a Clarion directory and the
installer will automatically detect to which Clarion version the folder
belongs to. The attached screenshot is from your installer after the user
selected the Clarion 6 directory -- it automatically enabled the Clarion 6
radio button.
Hope this helps.

By the way, if the user would select a Clarion 5.0 directory (not a valid
Clarion version in your case because you only support C55 - C7) then the
installer would not enable any "Clarion version" radio button and the user
would be unable to continue the installation process.

[] Clarion 7
[] Clarion 6.3

Yes, this is starting to make sense. So we just have the question why C7
didn't show up under Win7. I will test this out on a Vista64 as I have that
