Windows 7 RTM - MSDN and TechNet Subscribers with slow download rates
For MSDN and TechNet Subscribers with slow download rates using the usual
File Transfer Manager, try this instead.
This is the article I found concerning a faster method.
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=807548&st=450&p=591391542&#entry591391542
Here are the site references - Basically sign in as usual AND use the TOP
Downloads!
You will be using the Download Manager (same one some used for Windows 7
Beta and RC) instead of the File Transfer Manager, so be sure and allow the
add-in (if needed) and allow any pop-ups in your IE browser as well.

Thank you David - here works a charm : downloading at 850 kb/s ..... after having drooled all night in the FTM and stoped at 4% .... :)

Thanks David, I was at 13% at 90 minutes using the standard links.
Already at 15% within 5 mins.
PS: I'd like to know how many folks are trying to download it today. gotta
be 2 million or more I'd bet. Supposedly it's going to be Microsoft's
biggest release since Windows from DOS. I've had great success with my 7201
build, the RTM I heard is in the upper 7800's. Gotta be pretty darn stable.
I haven't had one single problem with this build! Looks like MS might've
"finally" got it right. Bout' time! <g>

Maybe not!

Appears to only affect chkdsk. Which I'm not too concerned about right now.
But, it's MS, they'll have a fix for it faster than you can say what memory
leak <g>. Hopefully.....

Not to mention that if you ( you, me, anyone ) keeps reading the comments,
where research has been done, this is not a showstopper at all.
Like the one guy said - "I can't remember the last time I used chkdsk with
the /r option anyway". Agreed.
The people who love Linux, hate MS, will eat this crap up. Let em wish. I
Linux or Apple or for that matter, ANYONE could come out with a better OS,
they'd have done it by now - what's to stop them?

Indeed, Don, indeed. I read a recent article by a Linux die hard who says
that Windows 7 is going to be the final nail in the Linux desktop. I am
watching this pantomine unfold with a gret deal of interest. The only folk
I have heard slate Windows thus far are those who choke on the word MS on
account of some sort of hate for Bill and his entourage.

Don,
Well, I appreciate the improvements that I experienced in W7 Release
Candidate, and hopefully, this RTM version is just that much better, and
even more stable BUT - I have been a Vista advocate from early on.
So, my thinking is this - they had a LOT more right (with Vista) than most
were willing to admit, but that does not negate the improvements that they
DID need to make this a much more widely accepted OS.

JP,
You're welcome!
In addition to the W7 RTM DLs, I needed to download a MUCH smaller DL from
the site (about 500MB), and of course, it WAS NOT in the Top Downloads
list, so conventional File Transfer Manager had to be used, instead of the
faster Download Manager method - and it crawled!
Supported Upgrade Scenarios
Microsoft Windows 7 RTM
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx
Sadly, though for W7 RTM, officially supported upgrade scenarios do NOT
support W7 RC to RTM - I guess the more daring will try it.

Of course, inevitable it WOULD return back to more normal speeds, but some
of us wanted to get it as quickly as possible - create new VMs with Windows
7 RTM, and get started transfering our work from the previous RC.
And, the alternative posted - provided just that! :-D
Of course, the official line:
Supported Upgrade Scenarios
Microsoft Windows 7 RTM
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx
was no W7 RC to W7 RTM conversion (please note this page DOES list Vista to
Windows 7 RTM upgrades, though)
matter of fact, there is a MinClient number that does just that - prevents
an upgrade RC to RTM.
However, I did not find this reference until AFTER I created clean install
RTM, and transferred work from one of my VMs.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3075/how-to-upgrade-the-windows-7-rc-to-rtm/
BUT, I did take the previous W7 RC VM, and using the method described on
that web page, successfully converted a W7 RC to W7 RTM - attached is a
screen shot showing updated version.

David,
Does this free release go obsolete when "gold" paid version is released?
If so, when?
Sorry, I haven't been following due to w7 being specifically designed
not to work well (may work in non-aero mode?) with millions of lightly
aged and used notebooks' video cards and ram limits which have no
solution but to toss in just another global techo-garbage heap.
Best Regards,
Paul

Paul,
No, you have 24/7 use of Windows 7 RC (release candidate) until March 1
2010.
Release Candidate
Starts shutting down every two hours: - March 1, 2010
Expires - June 1, 2010
Not sure when - IF they'll do it with Windows 7 - but try to attend one of
those roll out Previews - usually about a month before GA (general
availability) - October 22 - I attended a 4 hour session for Vista, and got
a copy of Windows Office Professional 2007.

Effective!
Wonder how many other products will begin using this technique for
annual subscription products?
Cheers,
Paul
