Lindersoft has teamed up with Comodo, Inc.
February 08, 2007 - Lindersoft, a widely-recognized provider of installation
authoring and software configuration solutions, today announced it has
teamed up with Comodo, Inc., a leading WebTrust Compliant Certification
Authority, to make Code Signing and SSL certificates available to qualified
Lindersoft customers at a discounted price.
Comodo's range of solutions gives businesses the ability to create online
trust through proprietary technology that help e-businesses convert more
customers, retain more customers and increase lifetime value. From providing
certificates that put the trusted padlock on websites to patented
technologies that lets internet users verify legitimate web content from
faked content, Comodo empowers businesses and consumers to authenticate each
other and protect their digital identities.
"I am proud to announce that customers with a current SetupBuilder
Maintenance Subscription or a current Lindersoft Community Membership can
purchase Comodo Code Signing Certificates at a discounted price," says
Friedrich Linder, president of Lindersoft. "All qualified Lindersoft
customers are able to purchase code signing certificates for as little as
$66 per year (on a three year term). The same certificate can be used to
sign application, installation and PAD files."
Our company philosophy is to provide high quality software systems and
service to our customers, which will enable them to gain a competitive
advantage over the rivals.
What is Code signing?
Code signing is about verifying the origin of digital content and the fact
that it hasn't changed since it was signed. If you trust the source, then
you can trust the application because it comes from a verified source. Code
signing technology is an important part of your security plan if your users
download and install programs or active content.
Recent operating system updates to Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and the new
Windows Vista make it vital to use digital signatures in your application
files and installation packages. Vista uses code signing more widely than
earlier versions of Windows. With the increased level of warnings in Vista,
signing your application and installation files gives end users the
reassurance they need to proceed with the installation.
Pricing and Availability
The Comodo Code Signing Certificate is available at a discounted price of
$79 (1-year), $143 (2-years), and $200 (3-years) to qualified Lindersoft
customers. For more information, visit http://www.lindersoft.com.

Our server is busy sending subscription notifications out to SetupBuilder
customers. You should receive it within the next 24 hours.
If you have a valid maintenance subscription, the notification includes your
"Lindersoft Community Membership" information. This is required to take
advantage of the discounted price.
BTW, we do not make a profit on it. Comodo, Inc. handles the ordering
systems. Our company philosophy is to provide high quality software systems
and service to our customers, which will enable them to gain a competitive
advantage over the rivals.
We have to approve each Comodo certificate request. Andrea will handle the
approval process.
This is not an automated process! Prior to issuing a certificate, Comodo
will take a number of steps to verify your identity. For commercial
publishers, Comodo does a considerable amount of background checking.

Friedrich,
This is a significant benefit to your customers and I hope you are repaid
for your efforts.
btw, I currently have a certificate that expires at the end of the year.
Do you know if I can references that certificate for "renewal" or do I need
to go though the process again?
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
Okay, found it. You only have to use the links from our web site to connect
to the Comodo order system. This qualifies you for the special price. Then
login using your current Comodo login/username and you are done ;-)

Friedrich,
Congratulations on this historic and significant marketing agreement - not
only does your company continue to enjoy status in the computing world at
large as one of the premier Setup Tool providers, but your company now has
extended your product line to include critical tools needed for Vista and
other security verification needs, at a reasonable cost, similar to what you
provide in your SetupBuilder line of products compared to your competition!

By providing non-SetupBuilder owners a reasonable method (Lindersoft
Community Membership) to obtain your very favorable pricing for the Comodo
certificates, you have employed another great marketing tactic!

"Customers with a current SetupBuilder Maintenance Subscription or a current

Friedrich will deliver the qualified answer, but I interpret that to mean
you must have a current maintenance subscription (not just owning
SetupBuilder) or pay for the Lindersoft Community Membership - Annual
Premium Membership at USD $50.

We have received a lot of certificate requests. Comodo is still working on a
minor order system problem, but they told me they will get this worked out
today.
Let me explain the code certification request process.
- Step 1:
The first step is that the customer will be required to enter their
Certificate Signing Request (Product Details). Comodo told me that they
would suggest to go with the default options. Custom options could create
problems at times.
In the process of applying for a Code Signing ID, your browser will generate
a private key. Please make a back-up copy of this private key, as you will
need this key to sign code. This key is never sent to Comodo, so if you lose
this private key, you will be unable to sign code. If this key is lost or
stolen, please contact Comodo immediately.
- Step 2:
The next step is that the customer will be required to enter their corporate
details.
- Step 3:
If you press the Agree & Continue button, Lindersoft will "authorize" the
certificate request. This initiates the customer validation process.
- Step 4:
A confirmation email with instructions for validation will be sent to the
customer and Comodo will begin validating the application.
Comodo will take a number of steps to verify your identity. For commercial
publishers, Comodo does a considerable amount of background checking.
- Step 5:
Upon successful validation of the application the pending Certificate will
be issued.
At the end of this process, Comodo will send you an e-mail containing a PIN
Personal Identification Number). Follow the instructions in this e-mail to
pick up your Digital ID. Save your Digital ID as a file (e.g.
MyCredentials.spc).
By the way, the details that will be required for validating your
certificate are as follows:
If the order has been applied for in your company's name:
Articles of Incorporation
Business License
DUNS details (e.g. your Dun & Bradstreet company number)
If the order has been applied for in your trading name (and you do not have
access to the above documents):
Trading License
Copy of utilities bill / bank statement / check containing your trading
name
If the order has been applied for in your own personal name or the order is
not for use by a commercial entity:
Copy of your drivers license or passport

Hi Friedrich,
Thanks for your detailed explanation - and for your effort to supply this
service to your users.
I have two questions:
1) At what step does the payment take place.
2) If you already have a current - or an expired Comodo certificate - how
will the process differ.
May I suggest you place these instructions on your website - would save you
from having to repeat yourself over and over ;-)
Cheers,

After we have "authorized" the certificate request (Step 3), Comodo will
contact you to handle the payment process. We do not make a profit on
certificates so the money goes directly to Comodo.

"Return customer" must follow the same product links as first time purchase
customers. When a customer logs in at this point, their existing details
will be retrieved and they will not be required to complete the corporate
details page. All details (Company Name, Address, Admin Email Address, etc)
provided during the application for the first product will be used in the
validation and issuance of the additional products. The customer will only
be required to complete the first page.

Good idea ;-)
Thanks,

Friedrich,
One caveat as far as Comodo's default options.
IIRC, their default option is for a 1024-bit key length
This article, at least, says "Authenticode signatures should use a 2048-bit
key." (Third paragraph under the "Signing the Application" heading)
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa480150.aspx
Also, I don't recall whether the default is to save the private key as a
file. I personally prefer that:

Jane,
Interesting information! Thanks for sharing the link.
BTW, our own certificate has a 1024-bit key length.
Yes, the default is to save the private key (I also did this). And
supporting the contact email address is a good idea (IMO).

Friedrich:
Have you then tried to use the private key and .spc file to code sign an exe
or dll with the MS CodeSign.exe ? I think it should work. I use to use pk7
files bug spc is recognized by codesign.exe I believe.
Do you have sample command lines for CodeSign.exe for use with your
certificates or a better way for 'community members' not necessarily using
setupbuilder to sign code?
If codesign.exe is the best way to go, do you have codeSign.exe on your site
for download? I cant seem to find it anymore in favor of the .net version on
microsoft's site.

offer???

Colin,
Yes, that's correct. As long as we generate enough money for Comodo,
Lindersoft customers can purchase Comodo Code Signing Certificates at a
discounted price.
