I'm just interested to know how others know which user has performed a web
update, if you do such a thing. It's not something I'm desperate for, but I
was just being curious at this stage :)

Colin,
In our upcoming RegKISS product, we can actually tell you which users have
done a web update, which ones were completed (vs partials), as well as the
date/time and other logging details.
SetupBuilder is a "Smart Client" for RegKISS and there is a secure channel
available between the two during the normal check for updates process.
We can do all sorts of things such as validate registration (and
subscription) codes, issue, transport and install new replacement codes,
and even let your program know that a code is invalid (or has expired) so
that you can do whatever you would normally do at that time.
Since this all takes place during the normal check for update cycle to your
website, it does not raise any red flags in the end user firewalls. The
entire process is a seamless integration into your existing website - yet
no program has to be installed ON your website.
Friedrich and I have been working on this stuff for a long time (as some
here will remind me no doubt), but the capabilities that we are building is
something that has never been available to developers before.
More on all this soon...
;-)

I don't have a real close estimate yet.
Friedrich has a lot of the SB6 side stuff in place (just hidden in the
build) and we still have a few details to work out in the security module
that works with both products.
The Vista release (and subsequent Comodo certificate run<g>) have delayed
things a bit and of course these were issues that required immediate
attention by Friedrich.
We've been swapping some emails on this very subject and hope that we can
get the other details worked out in short order.
On our side we are using RegKISS daily for registration codes management
even as we work on the new features.
So hopefully we will get things sorted out soon.
BTW - what we are initially doing with the project is really just the tip
of the iceberg in regards to what we should be able to do with the
technology.
