Hi Friedrich

Is there a list of the different features & tasks the example projects carry
out?

I'm just trying to establish what the different example projects do without
having to load each one up and go through the scripts.<g>

The Examples Package also installs Jane's excellent "Learning SetupBuilder
Part I". "Everything you ever wanted to know about SetupBuilder but were
afraid to ask" introductory materials. She goes through all the projects in
deep detail ;-)

Learning SetupBuilder Part I contains a VERY healthy dose of wonderfully,
illustrated screen shots as well!

Richard,

I work on a very large monitor and switch frequently between the host OS
and one vital virtual machine - so to me, it's as if working with 2 large
monitors -

The six monitor method would work better for me in home theater mode!

However, this is a SetupBuilder forum so let me make a remark there -
having SB in both HOST and vital VM helps when I want to update to the
latest SB in the one test bed, briefly test, then update the other.

However, I only use 1 copy at a time, same HD, one in the Host OS
partition, one in the VM.

Hi Dave

Why do you have anything on your Host OS? If anyone nicked your machine, at
least you only have to get a new machine, reinstall VMware and restore
backups of your VM instances and away you go everything where it was before,
so no reinstall hassle, plus you can still have many different instances of
SB installed on VM instances as well?

Beauty of the setup I have is I can drag the SB install on to multiple test
OS's and if I'm installing something like say MS SQL 2008 with my apps I can
leave each OS instance installing whilst cracking on with something else.

I have software installed on the host simply because it is V64 while my VMs
are all Vista32 or XP (I do have one V64 for testing though). I use a 26"
(single) monitor and I think it cost more than the machine<g>

Richard,

Actually, you HAVE described fairly well the way I operate - I depend on
VM's to get me back up and running in short order - as in get a host
running quickly - restore VMs and install VMware Workstation - and yes,
everything is back in quick order.

HOWEVER! A 64 bit HOST OS - IMHO, and my tests - operates MUCH quicker than
a 64 bit VM - so I like to have some minimal programs running in the host
for quicker response times.

Of course, we all have lots of strategies for how we need to work for
certain projects, overall efficiency, etc

But, I quite agree with you - spreading your work out in VMs is certainly
one of the smartest ways to operate in 2009!

I have a 64bit Vista VM on a 64bit Vista host. The host has quadcore with
8GB ram, where as the VM can only utilize a maximum of 2 CPU and definitely
less ram than the host<g> I found that the performance was not really
comparable. I have MS Office and several other software installed on the
host and have been very happy with it.

Yes, exactly the point I was trying to make with Richard - yes, using VMs
is a great way to utilize resources more efficiently - I can be compiling
C6 in a VM, while working on other projects in the Host OS partition.

And as you found out - the Host is faster, and more responsive with
programs like MS Office.

I do quite a bit of research using FireFox browser - and it's MUCH more
responsive in my HOST, than a VM overall.

The responsive issue is partly a network NAT issue that is slowing things
down, but yes the Host is the most responsive but I would say the VM's are
still responsive enough to make them usuable.

Take now for instance I have 5 VM's running using 82% of 8Gb (XP/C6, W7
32/SB, XP/test installation W7 32/test installation, W7 32/Office) and I can
flick my thumb mouse across to any monitor running a VM on the machine plus
I also have OE open on my V64 host with Firefox for net look ups. Its all
very quick and usuable.<g>

I think Arnor and I are both running the Q9550 & same ram if my memory
serves me right from reading one of his previous posts so the hardware is
quick and able to say the least.<g>

The only thing I do want to do is get OE in its current form running on Win7
as the Win7 equivalent doesnt let you set the synch option to download all
messages or just headers to subscribed ngs.

Richard,

Right, you're using the best of both worlds - VMs for a variety of testing
beds, Clarion compiling, etc - whatever is the best overall strategy for
your company needs - and the host OS for other programs as you see fit.

I have always used non-microsoft solutions for email client and newsgroup
reader activities, but I suspect more of us will reconsider updated
programs that are more Windows 7 friendly in the near future.
