....trying to use the 'correct' path equates, but.....

Ok I don't get it:
%PROGRAMFILESDIR%\[PRODUCTNAME] works
but
%_CSIDL_PROGRAM_FILES%\[PRODUCTNAME] doesn't????

In your question your have %_CSIDL_PROGRAM_FILES%\[PRODUCTNAME] but the
screenshot shows %_CSIDL_Program_Files%.
Variables are case sensitive - runtime variables are uppercase. I think you
did not use <Crtl>+<Right-Mouse>.

Ok - don't know what happened, but I deleted the entry box contents, and
re-entered.
Now, as you say, the 'CSIDL' version correctly resolves to Program Files.
The previous version still looks correct to me except..... I typed in mixed
case, not upper - maybe that's it?
