View Full Version : Setupbuilder won't setup

I am using Vista

I have a problem that seems to be unique to those setups I need to
install that use SetupBuilder.

Without exception when running such a setup at some early point
(typically after accepting the license and perhaps location for
installation) I receive the error message "SetupBuilder has stopped
working."

The only way I have been able to somewhat install those programs is to
install them on an xp machine and then copy the directories to the
Vista machine.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Drew,

Perhaps something could come to light if you did an install script with the
example applications. Build it like you normally do and then submit the script
here. Perhaps something could be spotted then.

Are you using the latest 6.5.1876? IMO, you are using an older version.
There was a (confirmed by MS) bug in previous Vista versions. We had a
ticked open with Microsoft. The latest SetupBuilder provides a permanent
workaround; Microsoft fixed that bug in the latest Windows Server 2008 (I
don't know if they also fixed in the latest Vista).

You're thinking about the wrong end. I'm not talking about using
SetupBuilder to create setups. I'm talking about the Setups I receive.

For example, I purchased the Template course from SoftVelocity. I
can't install it. Nor can I install any program that uses SetupBuilder
as its installer.

Drew,

If the Template course from SoftVelocity is not installed by 6.5.1876, then
the Microsoft Vista bug kicks in. Microsoft told us that the Vista bug will
be fixed in one of the next patches - they already fixed it in the new
Windows Server 2008 beta build.

Try this:

http://lindersoft.com/c6_vista_fix.exe

I suspect that your Clarion under Vista install is not "Clarion Aware" - so
your installers that look for the usual pre-Vista info to complete their
install are failing.

Does this work?

I don't know how to make this any clearer. It's not just the
SoftVelocity course. It's ANY PROGRAM using your SetupBuilder.

They just will not install.

BTW, what is the Microsoft Vista bug?

Hmm, I really think I answered your question. You reported that it stops
working typically after accepting the license and perhaps location for
installation. I answered that, if the installation is not powered by
SetupBuilder 6.5 build 1876, it's possible that you receive that
installation error on Vista. A call to SHBrowseForFolder and
SHGetSpecialFolderLocation on Vista and Longhorn can cause a stack
corruption and the application GPFs.

Our own programs are compiled with 6.5.1876. For example:
http://www.lindersoft.com/sb50trial/sb6_Dev_Trial.exe

This should not cause the error because it includes the permanent
Vista/Longhorn fix.

Does this help?

You were absolutely correct.

So is there anything one can do except hope that people update their
copy of SetupBuilder?

Hi Drew,

Unfortunately, you cannot do anything except asking that people to recompile
the installation images with SetupBuilder 6.5 Build 1876. About 93% of all
SetupBuilder customers have a current maintenance subscription to get free
SetupBuilder updates, so it should not be a problem.

The main problem is that not all Vista users receive this error. So it's
possible that your program vendor cannot reproduce the installation issue.
It only happens on VERY few Vista machines (depends on the Vista edition and
patch release, installed language packs, and more).

I am sure that VERY few people with Vista have ever noticed this problem.
We sent a source code demo to Microsoft and they fixed it immediately in
Windows Server 2008 (took only two days), but I think it's harder to fix it
with all the different Vista editions. That's why we have developed a
permanent workaround in SetupBuilder.
