View Full Version : Comodo question

My certificate is due for renewal in December. So I am starting to worry
now!
I know you cannot buy now and have that added to the end of the current
certificate which would help so ...
It is recommended that you collect the certificate from the same machine as
ordered from and that the machine should be XP. So what if you do not have
access to a XP machine?
Such is the confidence I have in Comodo making the ordering simple!
As Microsoft have now all but dropped support for XP I might not have any XP
machines left by the time my order comes up for renewal and why should I
continue to keep one machine just to order a certificate every 3 years?
Thanks
John Fligg

John,
Two best reference sources that I have found are:

Hal Heindel plus Friedrich Linder comments
Ignore Hal's screen shot - Jane Fleming has a better one in her CHM or PDF

As far as XP goes, do you have access to a XP Virtual Machine - Windows 7
Professional, Ultimate, Enterprise provides a FREE XP VM with XP Mode.
A lot of us are using virtualbox or VMware Workstation with an XP license
we supply in a XP VM.

I broke all the rules. I ordered mine with Windows 7, running
Firefox. It worked just fine. <g>

I tried it with Chrome once and it didn't work but I can't remember
what the problem was.

Mike,
Did you need any special extra help from Comodo support because you ordered
it that way - in what format was your codesign files delivered to you by
Windows 7 and FireFox?
http://www.tech-pro.net/code-signing-for-developers.html
"When your application has been approved you will receive an email inviting
you to download your code signing certificate. The exact process will
depend on which web browser and operating system you use to order the
certificate.
Firefox and Internet Explorer under Windows XP will create separate .pvk
and .spc files on your hard drive.
Internet Explorer 7 under Windows Vista will save your certificate directly
in the browser's certificate store, from where you will need to export it
to a file."
Through Lindersoft's special agreement to provide a Comodo CodeSign
discount to us for an excellent value for 3 years of USD $200 -
personally, I would choose the safest and best method to deliver the
"separate .pvk and .spc files on your hard drive"
as illustrated in my screen shot for XP Pro SP3 and IE 6.
Both screen shots were at the beginning of the order process at the Comodo
site - not signed in.
and if that means ordering it with XP and IE through a XP Virtual machine,
and since good testing protocols including testing in Windows 7, Vista and
XP - can't imagine that is a difficult way to order it for most, IMHO! :-D

The only reason I had to contact Comodo was to provide copious proof
of the validity of my corporation's existance. <g> The rest of the
steps were pretty straightforward.
The method to export the certificate from FireFox is documented on
their site. The fact that I'm using Win7 seemed to have no bearing on
the situation.

Mike,
The reason I asked, is because other developers have gone through the
process or will go through the process, are uncertain as to where the
certificate is - not sure to do what you did, etc
Of course, under XP and IE 6 - will create separate .pvk and .spc files on
your hard drive location - C:\mykey.pvk
Your method is valid too - with the extra steps of dealing with a browser -
certificate - and exporting.
BTW, just online CHATed with Comodo tech support, and here is the step by
step instructions, and URL reference for those that want to document
Firefox method.
Gordon: 1) Inside Firefox go to Tools -> Options (Windows), Edit -> Options
(*nix), Firefox -> Options (Mac)
Gordon: 2) Then go to Advanced -> General -> Encryption and click on "View
Certificates".
Gordon: 3) Select the tab that says "Personal" or "Your Certificates".
Gordon: 4) Highlight the certificate
Gordon: 5) Once highlighted select the button that says "Backup".
Gordon: 6) Next one should be prompted to save the file.
Gordon: 7) Provide a password for your .p12 file.
Gordon: 8) Click 'Save'

Gordon: You can refer "Export to PFX" topic in the following link for
exporting the certificate to .pfx file

Abe,
It would appear from my limited testing with the start of the Comodo order
process and Mike and others who have commented -
Under XP and IE 6 - will create separate .pvk and .spc files on
your hard drive location - C:\mykey.pvk
Use either FireFox or IE on Vista or Windows 7 - it is saved to Browser
certificate location and one must use an export procedure to save it to
file formats that can be used more easily (and backed up and stored) with
either signcode.exe or signtool.exe

David,
You are right. I exported to a pfx file and it requires signtool.exe to
sign files. I already have signtool and since I'm 2 1/2 years away from
renewing, I don't plan to keep an XP machine around just for that.
As far as backing up, I backup my pfx file every night.

Abe
