All,

We are in the planning phase of the "SetupBuilder Tips and Tricks, How-To,
and Beyond" papers/FAQs and new examples for the project Examples package.

- What topics would you like to see discussed in the papers/FAQs?

- What source code project examples would you like to see?

Thanks,
Friedrich

I'd like to see an example install that is a complete install with a server
and workstation install all in one... I'm in need of one now! :) Also maybe
a document that explains which features are in which examples.

Hi Lisa,

Something like the following?

- Server Install installs all files.
- Client Install installs shortcuts only

Documentation explaining which features are in which example is a great
idea.

Thanks,
Friedrich

Friedrich,

These probably exist in some fashion, but topics like these would good (in no
particular order) and may even overlap a little:

-- Installing to Vista machines
-- Code signing
-- Dual installs, Vista vs. non-Vista.
-- Installing and launching a service on a server
-- Live updates from an app (like you do with SetupBuilder). Step-by-step
details needed.
-- Discussion on how and why you would use static vs. dynamic scans.
-- Registry uses, when to use them and which keys one should not use. Better
than INI? Such uses would be things like time out dates, number of uses of an
app, etc. There may be others (I'm sure there are <g>).

Couple more:

-- Installing an SQL application. MSSQL would be a good model to use and maybe
one of the other ones. For example, what if MSSQL is not installed? MS Express?
Execute scripts to create a new database and so forth?
-- Installing .NET applications. Framework install too?

IMHO there is a need for an example of an upgrade patch.

Few months back, I think, we discussed how to create web updater that
could update multiple installs, such as for example our products, with
just one executable web updater. I would really appreciate that
documented somewhere as I seem to have lost it and I can't find it
again:( I LOVE the web update! It has saved me so much time and
effort in the past 2 years since I implemented it in my client
project. Simple, sweet and works every single time!:)

How to install PostgreSQL with minimal operator input on a standalone
workstation. Also on a server. Emphasis being on minimal operator
input since the typical user is not a DBA in this situation. Also
handle the situation where PostgreSQL might already be installed.

I second that one. Other db engines as well would be nice.

Okay. But in this case (DB engines, etc.), we need your help. For example,
we have absolutely no experiences with PostgreSQL.

Hi Friedrich,
I know, I know, but you asked <g>.
No, seriously - I think it's a good approach if someone with special
knowledge can/will contribute. I'm about to dig into creating an installer
that includes PG. Whatever I find out I'll like to share. Just gim'me a
little time.

I think it would be extremely useful if a Tips & Tricks Guide could feature
examples of installing major db engines. After all, that's what people need
to do.

Arnór,

Was this it?
There was a thread you started on May 5 to which Friedrich replied:

-----------------
Arnór,

One "regular" wupdate.exe can only update one product.

Because wupdate.exe is just a simple tool to check for updates and, if a
new version is available, download the update installer, you can modify
it to handle multiple-updates.

Product info initialization is done from line 28-45 in the standard wupdate
script.

Perhaps pass the product name or product GUID to the wupdate.exe client
via the command line, etc.

the subject was? I think it may have got attached to an old thread in
my reader as I can't find anything around that time period that
fits...

If I sort messages by sender and scroll to your name, it's there. Just
browsing by date I don't find it.

I'll paste the various posts into a text file and attach.

Great idea Friedrich!

I have a situation where a separate (and possibly multiple) data CD is
included with the setup and that data doesn't necessarily get installed
in a sub-directory of the exe; it needed to have it's own directory dialog.
I did the install and it works, but I would love to see how you would've
done it.

I would also second the idea of a topic on remote/auto/web updating. I
am currently using SB and Capesoft's SafeUpdate. (Again would love to
see how it looks when done correctly <g>)

What do you mean by "Whats happened in your program with this update"? A
"before and after web update execution" file/registry/etc. comparison?
