View Full Version : PayPal Payment Option (FAQ)

All,
Interestingly, about 20% of all payments for new SetupBuilder licenses or
subscription renewals are done via PayPal. I really did not expect this and
"Do you accept PayPal?" is becoming a FAQ.
Yes, in addition to accepting most major credit cards, Lindersoft also
allows customers to pay with PayPal. When customers choose the PayPal
payment method, the WebStore directs them to PayPal's Express Checkout
interface, where they can quickly authenticate their payments. After
authentication, the customers return to the WebStore to complete their
purchases.

That's pretty much the percentage for ClarionMag too - for some years
already.
A few years ago another third party vendor told me he was paid almost
exclusively via PayPal. That really surprised me.

90% of my sales are done through Paypal. But we also have Intuit
Merchant Services.
The benefit of Paypal is an excellent rate and no monthly fees. Their
virtual terminal (allows you to enter transactions) costs $30/mo. (I
canceled that)
Intuit charges $10/mo plus fees and has the ability to enter
transactions online.
So, for an overhead cost of $10/mo I can do it all.

Wow, 90% of your customers pay via PayPal? Amazing! Most (70%) of our
customers pay via Mastercard, Visa and AMEX. 10% pay via Purchase Order
(large companies, US military, etc.).

The cool thing is, we do not even need a PayPal account to support PayPal
payments. Our eCommerce provider handles all this completely
behind-the-scenes for us. They introduced the option to accept PayPal five
years ago, but because I was not a PayPal friend at all, we never made use
of this option. Then, eight months ago, we enabled this feature and now 20%
are using it.

If you have a paypal account and someone pays you from a paypal account
(and it has funds in it), there are NO fees.

Thats because SWREG is also a merchant, so you are paying them AND Paypal.
Paypal on their own (without an extra layer of merchants like SWREG, etc)
is pretty competitive to other online merchant accts.

Almost 100% pay via Paypal with a credit card. Without paypal accounts.
We use it just like any other merchant processor.

I guess I'm old fashioned.. about 1/2% purchase on our paypal or google....
the rest call us on our 800# and purchase by voice :) We always think it's
weird when someone pays for our software without calling us first... for our
business, we don't know why anyone would do that... but some have. Nobody
likes to talk on the phone anymore.

Ray,
I actually direct people I talked to to our purchase page online. Why?
Because I do not want any of their credit card info. The moment you
start becoming a custodian of credit card information you open yourself
up to a lot of security issues. No thanks.
And I tell my customers.

Good point.
Our POS/Video rental program can process cards outside of the scope of PCI
(and we use it for our business for our own sales)... so we're safe.. we use
Xcharge so we don't need to store the credit card info.
When we are selling someone software, we want it to be easy for them to give
us their money... and customers feel safer giving us the data over the
phone.. and we can ring them up while we're talking to them... so it's easy
for us.
Our big problem is training our customers to not store credit card
information.. because they do that so they can go back and charge late
charges or charge for a non returned movie. If they are using Xcharge.. it's
not an issue because of the token.... but for those that have a separate
machine.. they're storing the card data in our program.. we can't stop them
from doing it... if we take the cc field away, they'll store it in the memo
(which is worse). So, to protect those that insist upon entering credit card
info... we changed the name of the credit card field to blank... that keeps
us out of the scope of PCI/PA... and went ahead and encrypted the field
anyway.
If they use Xcharge and scan in the card to get a token, it stores the
allowable credit card #'s, and the expiration date, and the token.
So far so good... as long as Xcharge approves our software, we're good. We
comply with their rules because they are the ones that are PA compliant...
let them spend the money :)
