Just to let you know that I am now going thru Comodo Hell.
Got everything in order EXCEPT, they want a Phone bill, but they don't
accept VOIP.
I use Vonage exclusively. You would need to be stupid to use and pay for
a land line
from Verizon or AT&T these days... I am going to give them another 24
hours to sort
this out and get with the 21st century, and then cancel my order for a
certificate.
I've gone this long without one, so a few more years won't hurt.
Just venting......

Yup, it's an extreme PITA. I think they accepted my power bill or
bank account, or something like that. And then it was something else,
etc. It took 3 or 4 back and forths to get it sorted.

There are plans to not allow unsigned applications to run on Win8.

But I can assure you, this is not only with Comodo. All WebTrust companies
(agencies) follow the very same validation process (which is a nightmare).
This is not "their" validation process. And even Lindersoft (as a Comodo
partner) has to go through the very same process. We had to send all kind
of documentation.

BTW, and we had the same trouble with VeriSign (we needed a VeriSign
certificate and they never accepted our documents). So in the end, we were
unable to take part in the Windows Logo program because we did not receive
the certificate.

So the only advice I can give in this situation is to always be nice to them
and send whatever they want <g>. Otherwise, they will not issue the
certificate!!! I know of three companies who lost quite a few $$,$$$
because the WebTrust "agency" did not issue the required certificate and
they were unable to ship the software for months.

BTW, the major WebTrust agencies issue 500 certificates per hour, so they do
not care at all. And from my experiences, Comodo is the most nice WebTrust
on earth (no joke)!

I can vouch for the Verisign "problem" Fredrich had <vbg>

I can also advice to always go to the extends they ask as it IS WELL
worth it

For "anecdotal" info : when I needed my verisign certificate to be
Microsoft verified I had to ask (and he very nicely obliged) a US
friend to have his address confirmed by a "lawer" of sort special sort
so as to compell to "standards"
(if I remember well his company was not listed in the yellow pages or
something stupid thing like this and they requested a "terstified"
address "paper")

I was a bit put off by the MS Logo program. Verisign is the only cert they
accept, as if no other trusted agent is good enough. My program passed their
initial exam (including the install <g>). Seems $99 is a bit steep to get a
certificate you plan on using only once.

Have to agree there. I actually had little issue getting my cert. I think it
took me 2 days. I'm just so glad I decided to go for the 3 year option as I do
not want to go through that every year.

I'm hoping that when I renew, there won't be that same issue where you can only
get the file via XP.

It does and it doesn't.

Using Vista, I had to download the certificate to the "store" on the
machine, then export it to a pfx file.

One extra step, but not too onerous and I was curious to see how it would
work.

When I have time, I'll update that PDF I did for Friedrich with some screen

You can do that today with a VM running XP, Vista or W7 (UAC off)!<g>

I'm going to drown my next machine with processors and memory and run

> I've never seen a fast VM, just various degrees of slow. I like them for testing.

XP Pro in a Virtualbox VM (with the SATA Driver enabled in XP and with
hardware virtualization on the host) running on a Win7/64 host with plenty
of memory runs just as fast as it does without the VM.

Likewise I run Win7/64 as a guest OS in Virtualbox - same speed as the
host.

The key to success is PLENTY of RAM on the host OS ( 8 GB is not enough for
more than one VM running at a time IMHO ) and hardware virtualization
enabled.

I don't run anything on the host OS except F-Secure and Acronis.

I do all other work in VMs (even the Windows 7 stuff).

That way when it comes to replacing a hard drive or updating to a new
machine, it is just a FDISK/FORMAT/Install the host OS and Virtualbox and
then copy back my VM image backups (or just restore from Acronis) and I am
DONE.

Nothing to reinstall, nothing to reconfigure, nothing lost - especially a
week of my time.

So... you have licenses for the software you run in VMs.

Which means the process is "free" for you because you already have licenses
and don't need to purchase anything additional.

Someone with Win7 home premium, for example, is not entitled to a "free"
license to run XP in a VM.

Guess to me "free" means something that doesn't need to be paid for...
rather than something that's already been paid for.

You have to activate XP when it is installed to the VM.

So it is no different than installing it on physical hardware - you need a
license to make it go.

Virtualbox is free, well supported and if you install the Intel SATA
Manager into XP, it will allow you to run the SATA driver in Virtualbox.
That makes all the difference in the world on performance.

Hope it all works out.
Any suggestions on what I do next when I finally get the approval?
Should I download to my dev machine and install there only?
Can i install on more then one machine?

TIA

Dan,

Once you have your PFX (single file) - you can install it on as many
computers as you want - in the CHM version of this blog, I include a
Signtool.exe help topic -

It includes instruction for HOW to obtain signtool.exe and another
important file - capicom.dll (some forget to install and register this file
when they install signtool.exe on another or newer computer)

Dan,

What browser did you use to order?

- and have you entered a Comodo support ticket so they can walk you through
collecting the certificate - in the past, I have found support to be
helpful, regardless of mistakes made -

and, as painful as it is (you're not alone - many have been upset with the
process), you ordered a 3 year certificate - so once you get it, and
working, you can take some relief in the matter - it's GOOD for 3 years!

Tried to collect certificate and it states I need to collect and install
on the machine
I ordered it from.. Not good, the machine I ordered it from is for
internet ordering only and not for dev.

Hopefully I can get my money back, or this will be a 200.00 lesson for me.
Still not sure why I ordered this thing in first place. <grr>

Dan,

Sorry about your ordering troubles...

Even the "experts" have trouble from time to time - trying to get through
the process - AFTER diligently studying all suggestions and documention
from helpful sources - but here's a few more hints:

Have you submitted a Comodo support ticket? I have found them extremely
helpful in the past (mostly MY mistakes)

If you ordered it through a browser, such as FireFox - here is the Comodo
support page with instructions on how to export your certificate to a PFX
file (of course, you must use the same computer it ordered from
originally):

https://support.comodo.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=419&nav=0,96

Then, use your PFX file with Signtool.exe

I have several help topics in the CHM version of this blog (free download)
that should help as well.

Jane Fleming includes a LOT of valuable information in the Learning
SetupBuilder CHM - Code-Signing section as well.

I now have a gppcert.p12 file.
How do I convert it to a PFX file?

Dan, I had the same problem.
For details, find the thread "Code Signing - pkcs12"

In summary, I was able to import the P12 file into IE, and then export a
PFX.

Try that and see if it will work for you.

Dan,

There is no difference between a .PFX and .P12. Both are PKCS #12 files
(Personal Information Exchange Syntax). Both file extensions (.pfx and .p12)
refer to files that contain PCKS #12 content.

Hi Dan,

I bought a cell phone in the company name few years ago ONLY to be able to
verify it for the certificate. It's a huge PITA. Never the same person
that responds to you twice. Buy as many years as you can!

Best regards,

But at least, you received your code-signing certificate. I know quite a
few people who were not "accepted" (by Comodo, VeriSign, etc.).

That's why I always suggest to request a 3-year certificate. You don't want
to go through these hassles each year <g>.

Here's a good one for you. Comodo is trying to have us resell their
anti-virus.. so my biz partner put it on his machine.... and guess what, it
flagged our software... which, is signed by Comodo.

Most browser vendors "fixed" it and Microsoft provide a hotfix now.

But for quite a few people it's already too late and government got full
access to their (e.g. Gmail) email communication.
