View Full Version : Renewing maintenance plan

NewsArchive

Hi Friedrich,

I'm renewing my maintenance plan. When I've entered my information I
get 3 choices:

"Continue Shopping", "Back" and "Next", with the "Continue Shopping"
button being the default.

Which one of those will take me to the checkout so I can finish???

When I click on "Continue Shopping" I get a page with all the
variations of products/plans. On the top half of the page all the
image links are broken, i.e. no images show up.

So I pick the one I want and hit the "buy" button. It brings me back
to the first page... So it was the "NEXT" button I needed to check
out.

I don't know if this is hardcoded from Esellerate, but I don't find
this process intuitive. I'd change the "Continue Shopping" to "Shop
more" or something like that. "Back" can be as it is - but if it does
NOT work the same as the browser Back button there should be some
explanation as to why you should use the Back button on the page. If
it works the same as the browser back button, then I think it only
added confusion as people will stop to think if it's special or if
they should use it or the browser button. The Next button should be
"Continue" IMO.

I just find this confusing, but you know me<g>

<G>

Thank you for renewing your maintenance plan!

It's all hardcoded from Esellerate and I cannot do anything here ;-) It's
completely out of my control. They are the masters of eCommerce processing
<g>

Just hit "Checkout" and you are done.

Hi Friedrich,

>Just hit "Checkout" and you are done.

Wrong page<g> Hit Checkout and you'll see the "Continue Shopping",
"Back" and "Next" buttons at the bottom of the page. _That is what is
confusing, since you are already in the checkout process.

Aha, I see. Unfortunately, *completely* out of my control.

Continue shopping usually implies "go back to the shelves and look for more
stuff to buy".

That said, you have a point about the confusion issue:)

I agree, but usually you don't get that after you enter the actual
checkout process, i.e. it is usually when you are looking at your cart
and you haven't gone to checkout.

To me, when I have entered all my presonal information, I'm done,
enter the card number and I'm out of there. This is kind of like
being at the register at Walmart and after you have swiped your card
and you're waiting for the final amount, you'd be asked if you wanted
to shop some more - little too late IMO;)

Hi Mark,

While I agree that this is used by certain stores, this is not a
concept I've seen online as far as I recall. And even so, you are
generally asked _before_ you part with your money. In the case of the
esellerate site the "Continue Shopping" was on all the pages if I
remember correctly. I think it may be a bit counterproductive...

Yes, I renewed today and had to stop and think about this one too. Simply
removing the "Continue Shopping" button would be enough, there is a "Back"
button there.

Friedrich,

It would also be good to make clear in your "Renewal Notice" mail that
reneweing after the plan expired is $50 more. I was going to leave the
renewal for monday, but out of curiosity followed the "Maintenance and
Support Plan notes" link and then the order page. Now I remember reading
that in a previous mail or post, but I had already forgotten.

Other than that, renewal went smoothly, and got my key in a few seconds.

Regards,

Friedrich has said that he has no control over this interface so he
can't do much about it.

This is mentioned in the "FINAL NOTICE for SetupBuilder Renewal". We always
send out a final notice one week after the subscription expired ;-)

"This is the last chance to RENEW your SetupBuilder Developer Edition
maintenance subscription for just $149.00. Subscription REACTIVATION and
RENEWAL costs $199.00!"

This goes in the "Curse you, Red Baron!!!" department, Arnór...
But because of you, I bought "The Design of Sites".

I already knew that everything about my sites sucked.
Now I know exactly how much!!

Fortunately, it's wonderful therapy when I wake up at 2AM and can't get back
to sleep <G>

Jane,

You GO to bed before 2 AM - Well, as our good friend, Charles Edmonds would
say - "Slacker!"

Hi Jane,

Glad it works for something<g>

I think it is a very good book and gets you thinking about a lot of
stuff. It is one of -very, very few- books that I have where they
actually attempt to back some of what they are saying with studies
that have actually been done by someone. Not just opinions of people
who you have little idea what kind of substance have behind their
opinions.

I'm not done with it, but every page that I work through (some of them
I skip as they don't apply to what I'm doing) has something that
leaves me with new ideas. Having all those cross references in the
book is just awsome to me, it's almost like browsing a web page<g>

Hi Mark,

>I see it on thank you pages with regularity.

Yes, but that is after the order processing takes place. My point is
that _during_ the order processing, there is a "Continue Shopping"
button on the eSellerate pages. On Amazon.com for example, there is
only a "Continue" button that takes you from logging into an account
to selecting/entering shipping address to selecting/entering credit
card info to finishing the order. During that process there are no
links or buttons to continue shopping. I do not recall ever having
seen that _during_ the order process.

Perhaps his phrasing could use refining but the concept is found at most of
the pages I shop.

I say, buy a book from Amazon and then take some pointers from their various
buttons.

The most friendly sites usually give you the "Click here to see your
invoice", "Click here to see the status of your order", and "Click here to
do some more shopping" on that last screen.

Hi Andrew,

Look closer<g> It's before and after the order processing, not
during. I.e. it is NOT on their https:// pages. There is a continue
button and that's it.
