View Full Version : Add Application to the Windows Exception List - only PUBLIC checkbox set?

Hi Friedrich,

I use "Add Application to the Windows Exception List" (Add/Delete
Firewall Exception function) to add my application to the Windows
Firewall Exception List.

That's is working, BUT:
On my machine with Windows 7 (64-bit) there's only a checkbox set at
"Public", NOT at "Home/Work".

My NetTalk Web application also needs a checkbox set at "Home/Work" in
order to work correctly. Now I have to set this checkbox manually. :-(

Can you change this?

The firewall interface does not support this. So unfortunately, it can't be
done with a simple "change" in the source code.

Hi Friedrich,

That's a pity, but if it's not possible, ok, then it's not. ;-)

No, no..., sorry for the confusion. Just wanted to point out that it's not
possible to add support for the "Home/Work (Private)" firewall exception
location with a simple change in the code. We have developed a new
component from scratch to support this, but we have to wait for the public
Win8 (end of February) to test it.

Hi Jeffrey

That would open a HUGE security hole in the firewall if you could do something like they from an installer.

I agree 100%. IMO, Windows should not allow this at all because it is a
security hole. But MS provides some tricks to handle it from an installer.
I hope (from a security point of view) that it will not work in Win8 - but
from what I have heard, it will be possible.
