Intel's Windows 8 tablet

The new Atom Z2760 chip to power the Intel Windows 8 tablet will be
dual-core capable with "burst mode" (for quick bursts of performance when
needed) and Hyper-Threading. Battery life will be more than nine hours and
3G/4G will be supported. The Win8 tablet will be under 1.5 pounds with a
thickness of less than 9mm. And the best is it can run both Metro-style and
traditional Windows apps.

Intel is working with ten vendors in order to release Windows 8 tablets by
the end of 2012.

I have an acer tablet running Win7. The biggest problem is sleep/power
on/off - takes too long....
Win8 should fix all this.

Indeed, very nice. This tablet makes use of the Intel "Oak Trail" Z670.

The magic with the new Intel Windows 8 tablet (thin, light, powerful) seems
to be their Atom Z2760 chip ("Clover Trail"). The Win8 tablet will include
five physical buttons: power, volume up, volume down, rotation lock, and the
Windows key. The display will be at the minimum 1366 x 768 pixel resolution
with a depth of 32bits, the camera will be capable of at least 720p. WLAN,
Bluetooth 4.0 + LE, GPS, and various sensors will also be there. Oh boy,
I'll definitely order one :)

Strange that this is one of the Features we now talk about.
My first MS-PC a lowly XT-8086 PC (no touch-screen) had two physical buttons. One was
On/OFF and the other Reset.

My present HP Laptop (no touch-screen) has just one, the Power On/Off

My Kindle Fire (With touch-screen) has two physical buttons, my Motorola
phone/camera/browser/what-all (With touch-screen) has four.
So the better the Touchscreen capability, seems we need more physical buttons.
Probably because they "just work" :-)

Really? I have to admit that I don't miss touch from anything I do on my
PCs. Tablets are really cool, but to _me_ they are not very functional for
work related stuff that _I_ do. So I'm curious about what people will use
them for. In my experience with Android phones and tablets the touch is not
sensitive enough for precise work. The onscreen keyboards are really tough
on my hands, except on my phone.

I am using the Android tablet (a more "open" device) and iOS5 devices (very
"locked down") alot. I am also using an Atom based XP portable (but that's
not a tablet). But what I really really really want is a thin, light, and
powerful Win8 tablet that supports both Metro-style and (most importantly)
native Win32 apps.

I have quite a few internal Win32 apps that I would like to run on my tablet
(including our ordering / registration licensing system). And I don't like
the Android or iOS5 newsreaders - I hate them. I'll use my traditional Mail
client, Internet Explorer, FTP Voyager, LSZip, SetupBuilder, Help & Manual,
and Word on that tablet. My credit card is ready <g>

An Ultrabook that folds into a tablet. I bought a Motorola Xoom, and while I
really like it, and played with it a lot when I first got it, it sits most
of the time. I have software that I wrote that I need for myself. Writing in
Java or in Basic on the Xoom is a real PITA when you're used to Clarion. But
it does work great for Email, web browsing, and even some documents. I like
it for Skype too. And it's really great at syncing stuff on my phone.

But now I wish I would have saved my money and bought an Ultrabook with a
touch screen. To not have a real keyboard is a complete pain for doing
anything significant. So while I was betting on the Android's, I'm secretly
hoping MS comes out with something that I can use all my old software on..
oh that's right, it's already there... laptops, netbooks, Ultrabooks.

Yes, I can see running all kinds of programs, but for me I just have a big
problem with the input. Can you use the onscreen keyboard as a regular
keyboard (i.e. with 5 fingers) or is it thumbs-only?<g> I have a mild
tendency for arthritis and my hands just start to hurt after working my
Kindle Fire. I'm not even particularly found of Kindle on it<g> and I use
it mostly for the web.

Yes, I also have some problems with the input. My niece (15 years old) can
type so really fast on the virtual keyboard, it's amazing. And even my
daughter Emily (8 years old now) is WAY faster with the Android or iPhone 4s
virtual keyboard than I am.

But the cool thing is the "hybrid" 11-inch version of the Intel Win8 tablet
will also be equipped with a physical keyboard :)

an ARM processor will be a much better choice. Will it be VHS vs Beta?

Ass Jeff says. I am increasingly seeing proper keyboards attached to these
things wherever I go - especially airport member lounges and offices where
serious users are pounding away. The touch screen stuff seems to be
restricted to weaker users. We have done the fill circle. You are now
looking at a netbook with screen detached from keyboard. Go figure.
