Bob,

I see all others referring to SetupBuilder as the best choice, but IMHO,
you can give Inno Setup a try.

Your question included "for Clarion", but I think the installation
process is a matter by itself and should be considered as a main task as
well as writing the application.

Inno Setup is a programmer's tool, so it is based on a very, VERY easy
scripting language, which gives you total control of the whole process.
It is easy to write your own support functions, if you need, create
your own dialog boxes, if you need, and call external DLLs/programs, if
you need.

I can send you a real life script so you can have a more solid feeling.

One thing I'd like to mention is that I came to know Inno Setup when I
was searching for alternatives to the then dominant (much probably still
is) Install Shield. With the ever growing Windows complexity, that
thing grew to be a beast of about 200MB -- the installation program of
Install Shield.

Question: how does Inno Setup manage to achieve the very same result
with a free, open source, very light and stable program that amounts to
about 1.5MB?

Just having a looking to be convinced.

http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php

Hope you don't simply enter the band wagon on this one, and do a more
critic/analytic choice. Also, remember that you might have other
development tools in your box, like NetBeans or even, arghh, Delphi.

Bob, take this for a "test drive"!

Product Description - SetupBuilder Developer, MFG - Lindersoft
Internet Link - http://www.lindersoft.com/products_setupbuilder_dev.htm

Yes, Inno is popular, because it's free, but developers save a lot of time
and are more productive with commercially produced and state of the art
development tools - Lindersoft provides amazing support!

If you would spend some time in this newsgroup

You would see Friedrich is first class in tending to customer needs.

@Bob: Just for the records. SetupBuilder is completely language
independent. And yes, it *is* written in Clarion! We support 32-bit,
64-bit and even .NET deployment. Quite a few Wise users switched to
SetupBuilder!

The SetupScript scripting language is very easy to learn ("point-and-click")
and SetupBuilder provides web install and web update (live update), binary
patching, a Visual Dialog Editor, API calling (e.g. you can call into your
own Clarion DLLs or Windows APIs), and so much more.

There is a very nice and free "Learning SetupBuilder Part I" available
(including tons of source code examples) and a Developer's Guide in PDF
(500+ pages) and CHM format.

And if you have questions, just drop me a line or post on the SV
SetupBuilder newsgroup or visit our online community. And we even have
Script Writing Consulting available :)

simple test: send an email, and count the time for return repsonse and
_quality_ of response

i can usually count (in minutes) for a response from Friedrich after
the "send" is clicked

....and the question doesnt have to be product related, it can be within
the context of "installation software" and best practices. I'd say he
qualifies as an SME :-)

AWESOME!

I have the CJ toy suite and allowing the installer to be skinned would
complete the themed look for a few of my special apps. I don't always use
the skins but in those that I do it, would be great to have that ability.

Pratik,

Just don't misunderstand my statements as meaning Friedrich doesn't have
quality of service or doesn't sell a quality product.

But hey, one has got to understand the reasons for choosing this or that
strategy. Simple statements like "it's the best" or "beats them all"
don't help in the process.

Friedrich mentioned one very important feature, for some at least, which
is differential patching. Those long time Clarion users will remember
RTLinker, a product that excelled at that.

However, my personal goal for distributing a piece of software takes
into consideration that I need to release a version that won't need a
patch every Tuesday. I do that, then I'm doing something seriously wrong.

But then again, that's just me.

Gustavo

Actually if I remember correctly it was called RT-Patch.

It certainly does when those statements are true.

I'm rather confused how providing more flexibility in SB lessens it as
a product. At least that's how I'm reading your response.

I dare say Clarion does far more than you need it too but is that a
sound reason not to use it? Answer; no, it's not.

You have the right to not give a dang, as well as I have mine to favor
non-bloat code.

I know it is old fashioned, but I prefer the comfort of being prepared

should, and I have a true answer.

Lee,

I didn't say it wasn't doable in SB. As a matter of fact, I was
thinking about the way this thread is going, and I can't help asking my
self why, since the only time I mentioned SB in my original reply, was
at the introduction to it.

Then I mentioned InstallShield as being bloated and all.

And the, apparently almost everyone went out flaming me just because I
gave an answer with my considerations, which were, if you read well the
post, not abusive nor offensive in any way either against SB or Mr.
Friedrich.

Bob,

Of course, newsreaders haven't changed much in many years (technology wise
- just prettier interfaces) and going out of style completely for most
companies - use for support - BUT

Most popular commercial version is probably:

Product Description - Agent, MFG - Forte
Internet Link - http://www.forteinc.com/agent/

Free newsgroup reader

Product Description - Thunderbird, MFG - Mozilla
Internet Link - http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/

40tude Dialog is STILL a very good, FREE to use newsgroup client (DO NOT
install to Program Files area in Windows 7), I AM using it as I type.

but no web site URL available now - only CNET download - AND they do a
WRAPPER around the actual download - UGH!
