SetupBuilder 7.7 Build 3769 Tests in W8 RTM and Release Preview

(rather than re-write this for this newsgroup - just posting all my recent
comments in one message - some newly added comments as well)

Friedrich Linder recently made this ANN in
softvelocity.clarion.addons.setupbuilder

Here are some of my follow up comments in case you didn't read this group.

Works AS advertised - I am in testing now, and have been using Windows 8
release preview build 8400 -

SetupBuilder 7.7 Build #3769 - Clicked on the Windows 8 and Windows Server
2012 check boxes in Conditions Tab - recompiled, tested in Windows 8
release preview build 8400 - works GREAT!

Of course, also used SetupBuilder to re-manifest program files for Windows
8 and code-sign!

Added Note: Be sure you use the Conditions Tab (OS Version) for files AND
Shortcuts - Target Operation System.

As Friedrich already suggested, you may want to change your Shortcuts
strategy for Windows 8, so the Target Operation System will come in handy!

Also, retested under - Windows 8 Enterprise RTM 90-day evaluation - and
SetupBuilder 7.7 Build #3769 continues to work well.

IIRC, when Windows 7 went RTM, they changed a few things, and Friedrich had
to quickly recompile SetupBuilder for W7 installs - not so this time around
- SetupBuilder 7.7 Build #3769 works well with the RTM.

I'll be updating my company's - App Data UAC Safe CHM - at this location
soon - http://www.encouragersoftware.com/software-developers.html - with
reminder help topics for upgrading projects to Windows 8.

And to make it a bit easier for developers to download the latest - App
Data UAC Safe CHM - I'll be using a SetupBuilder install with web update
this time around!

Also, didn't want to wait til August 20th to get my Windows 8 RTM download,
and Microsoft has a Windows 8 Enterprise RTM 90-day evaluation.

It is available to developers (sign in with your developers Windows Live
ID) - NOT upgradable - so at least I can use the RTM version of this for a
couple days and do some more testing with SetupBuilder installs - sort of a
throw away W8 VM - A product key is not required for this software.

* * NO Clarion 6 - Windows 8 ALT bug * *

BTW, for those with Clarion 6 apps that could not resolve the Windows 7 ALT
bug (and are not testing Windows 8 and not aware) - there is NO Clarion 6 -
Windows 8 ALT bug!

You're welcome!

Some are moaning about W8, but when the dust clears (and we all learn some
basics, shortcut tricks, etc) - it already has the rock solid base of W7,
and although a different approach - the Start has a huge advantage over W7.

OK, at the Desktop, I can work as easily as before, pinning most used
programs to taskbar - when I boot up, at Start, tap a d key, now I'm at
desktop, then just tap the Windows key to toggle between Desktop and Start.

Big difference at Start, I can type a few letters of not so often used
programs

(instead of digging through Start Menu, All Programs, scroll list. click on
start menu folder of program group, finally select program)

and list of apps is narrowed, highlight, and start the program (or other
choices) - much quicker, less mousing, keystrokes, etc.

Built in OS support for touch screens - tablets - stand alone touch screen
monitors - will become important to many over time.

NOT quite the same, but - When consumer DVD was introduced (versus ever
popular VHS) and few DVDs to play, buy, rent - some disliked DVD
technology, but with a bit of time, the many advantages made other
technology seem very outdated.

Some see W8 as just an awkward way to use W7, and little reason to update,
I say, that will change quickly enough with advantages most don't perceive
for now.

Yes, but personally I like the way W8 does it! :-) Visually more
attractive, and icons - results (program names, help files, etc) are
larger.

Of course, since it's an OS change, not something you customize, some will
love it, others not so much.

For a developer, who can readily keep VMs to test W8, I can understand the
reason for some not to jump into a main W8 development computer - others
will like the advantages W8 DOES give over W7, and will readily adopt.

Now, for consumers and business alike, there will be compelling reasons to
upgrade - $40 upgrade to W8 pro - at the Vista or before level (if your
hardware is adequate) - for most, that would be a no brainer (obviously
corporations have larger budget considerations before switching).

XP users have more considerations, but with VMs so popular and easy to
implement, for some, not a difficult decision either.

Current W7 touch screen tablet owners - no brainer - get the OS with touch
screen support.

Other W7 owners, honestly, at $40, the price of a good util, another no
brainer.

Of course, I am one of those that adopted Vista two months after release,
so I like technology, and am willing to "bleed a bit", didn't regret it in
2007, and looking back, happy with the choice.

But W8 is just solid W7 with MANY advantages, much easier to adopt than
Vista was.

I find that an interesting tell.

If MS was so sure that W8 would fly, there would be no need to give away
the upgrade.

That could be since Vista sucked<g>.

Time will tell but I still predict that this flip flop into a UI that is
NOT intuitive (except for those idiots who simply play with their fingers
on it) is going to be a flop (especially compared to Windows 7).

If there was an option to simply use the old W7 interface and NEVER - EVER
see the "Modern UI", it might be better, but lets face it - it takes an act
of contrition to shutdown your system or reboot, so it is all downhill from
there.

I am beginning to think that Microsoft took their lead from SV and Clarion
8 in terms of usability.

Do you also have a Windows 8 MANIFEST file?
At this moment I include an external manifest file when Clarion 6.3 has
compiled my exe, but this manifest file supports upto Windows 7.

Jeffrey,

No, I don't at the moment - usually I obtain one (for latest OS) for
testing purposes, but since W8 is relatively new, I am using the
SetupBuilder method of embed a W8 manifest.

In the past, I have found it much easier, even in testing, setup a minimal
SetupBuilder project, so I can easily manifest, Armadillo protect,
codesign, or manifest, codesign

and readily create a small install file to quickly test a more complete
project.

I'm sure if no one chimes in here with a W8 manifest, ask in another
newsgroup.

Just use the "#embed UAC manifest..." compiler directive in SetupBuilder 7.7
to embed a Win8-aware manifest within your application .exe that is fully
backward compatible (see attached screenshot).

I know about that option, but in some situations I want Clarion 6.3 include
the manifest file.
At this moment I only have the upto Windows 7 external manifest file that I
sometimes include when compiling some app files.

So I am looking for a upto Windows 8 external manifest file.
Can you help me with that?
