Are the steps outlined on Jane's document still the same in order to
purchase a certificate? (http://www.lindersoft.com/CodeSign.pdf)

Thanks.

I went through the process again in June of 2011.

A few things were different... and I did a few things differently.

First, the Comodo website will let you log in using the credentials you used
when you bought a previous certificate. However, if you do so Friedrich's
discount will miraculously disappear. So forget the past.

Part of the verification process involved their wanting to look up my
website. I had to go to my registrar and temporarily suspend the privacy
thing so my name and address showed in the whois records.

I did NOT use XP this time... used IE9 on Vista. Did specify the key size
at 2048, exportable, Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0.

Which meant that when I retrieved the certificate (from the machine with
which I'd ordered it), it installed into the machine. I then exported the
PFX from IE. (pic)

Part of their verification process this time involved their phoning my
business phone number.

Hope that helps.

Jane

Hey... I remember being in a bar at Caesars in Vegas years ago (business
trip... I promise!) with some guys. I was the only one who ordered wine.
They got their drinks fast.
When the girl finally brought mine, she apologized: "Sorry for the delay.
The bartender had to open a new box."

At Caesars, it was probably a new carton of 144 bottles, but you never know...

Did you whine about the wine?

Jeff,

Yes, Jane definitely hit the highlights of what is needed over the last
couple years obtaining a code sign certificate - and temporarily suspending
the privacy thing is definitely the way to go - easy to do, add it back for
a small fee:

"IF they verify this email address through domain WHOIS information - it
must be publicly available for them to view during the order process -

IF you have private registration, you must suspend this WHOIS private
registration service until your validation is complete. Alternatively, you
can provide them with documentation from Private Registration company to
verify you are the registrant.

This might cause a delay - for my company recently, this is how I handled
it - there was a cost of about USD $16 for my Private Registration company
to verify it for Comodo, and only USD $10 for me to cancel it temporarily
(during the order process) and re-add it after I received the certificate."

https://support.comodo.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=1200&nav=0,96,7

"There are three main things which must be verified before issuance of a
code signing certificate:

1. The legal existence of the organization or individual named in the
Organization field of the code signing certificate must be verified.

2. The email to which the code signing certificate is to be sent must be
someone@domain.com, where domain.com is owned by the organization named in
the code signing certificate.

3. A callback must be made to a verified telephone number for the
organization or individual named in the code signing certificate in order
to verify that the person placing the order is an authorized representative
of the organization."

Also, Friedrich has a article here on business documentation:

More tips

If you haven't received anything more after a day or so - submit a support
ticket - "I have ordered my certificate, but not yet received it" is a
pulldown menu selection - and your current order number - this will help in
the support process if there are additional documents or steps you are
missing in the process.

Also, I would suggest (particularly if you ordered before and know what
kinds of documents they need for your company) to send scanned images (in
the support ticket process) of CURRENT documents that are needed to
validate legal existence of the organization or individual. You can attach
these scanned images in the support ticket format.

Jeff,

So, did you basically follow Jane's Tips (June 2011) "I did a few things
differently" and "completed today without a hitch"? Or anything you want to
add that you thought helped (in addition to Jane's tips!).

TIA,
David
