SetupBuilder is a native Windows application installation system. It does
not (and will not) support Linux or Apple applications.

Hi Friedrich.
You seem to be adamant that you will not be
Going down the Linux and Apple yellow brick road
Hmmm, Approximately, and Conservative, Minimum, 21.5 Million Linux Users
Apple App Store over 15 Billion Downloads.
Yeah I guess you are right, not worth the effort. :)

The success of any business depends on focusing on your core competency.
Many a business has seen its demise by fragmenting itself. Having worked
for many years as an accountant and auditor with Deloitte and Touche, one of
the largest outfits on the planet, and having advised countless businesses
on strategy and planning, I have seen many fail by not focusing.
As for the mobile apps, I have just attended a conference where we saw how
to develop mobile apps for all platforms [windows, apple, blackberry and
android] none require the same sort of install set as in SB. They are all
based on delivery to a repository and the phone can do the download. It is
all built in. In the case of Android you can just copy the file from one
device, for example a PC, to another.
As for Linux, from my experience with the 300 odd distros floating out there
and the zillions of uncontrolled packets doing the rounds it is an area that
is best left to the jungle that already exists. Not to mention that it
would be expected for Friedrich to give the thing away else he would not be
playing fair. 21 million users paying nothing. Nice one. Ask Mark
Shuttleworth of Ubuntu fame. He has learnt the hard way.
As for Apple, well, the less said about them the better. That is a closed
shop and they make it difficult for anyone to actually play along with them.
Also, they have been known to compete against their partners when it suits
them.
In my view form a pure business point of view it is best for Friedrich to
stay focused on his core competency which is producing the best windows
installer on the planet. The market is big enough and controlled enough and
predictable enough to ensure a very healthy and steady stream of income. It
also comes with far less baggage that all the other platforms seem to
attract. My guess is that Friedrich really does not need all this nonsense
in his life right now.
Cheers
Andre

I Will not be drawn into a Bunn Fight over this.
My last words on the Subject are, Other Development Tools
Cater for other OS Platforms, at the Installer Stage.
And honestly I think Friedrich is a big boy, who does not
Really need Defending.

Yes, (unfortunately) it is not worth the effort. Even Vise X (a market
leader for Mac OS X) does not really make money with the install product.
And Linux? InstallShield for Linux was a financial disaster for the
company.
We are a business, so we have to make money to continue to exist. The
SetupBuilder user base is growing and growing (we are one of the top 5
installation tool providers for Windows worldwide). And the new hybrid
Windows tablets provide a good chance to expand market share again.

A wise person once told me the first thing to do before is to define what
your business is.
Very obvious but often ignored.

Hi Friedrich
Just old and got wise with age I suppose.
Keep up the excellent work. An example to be followed by all of us.

Linux already has the RPM/DEB format files for installs. Nasty to work
with but they do everything.
The demands of Linux installs are so different that it would be a whole
new product. e.g. the User/Group/File Attributes dont exist with
windows. Its most likly not worth the effort.
