Friedrich (or anyone else as he's on extended holiday),

Just got a call from a client where they claim after pressing next from
the opening dialog of wupdate, the next button disables and they are stuck.

Its a 64-bit Windows machine (installed in Program Files\(x86)), access
to the internet, a new machine. Its the only machine this happens.

Tried running wupdate as administrator, same thing. This dialog only
shows when an update is detected from wcheck.exe in the code.

Any ideas?

Is this on a domain server?
Any group policies in force?
Any AV running?
What other processes are running?
Any proxy settings? ie can you access the online location via a web
browser from this machine.

Just a few off the top of my head.

Local machine on a network near as I can tell. I'll check on AV, but
not optimistic, since my impression is that it would not run at all. No
idea what other processes are running, but since the program is the only
shortcut on the desktop, I'd guess not many <g>.

Have to wait until the network guy gets back from holiday to check
proxy. These are very green users and no way can I walk them through
setting up a proxy.

Are you updating off the web or a local server?
To check the proxy settings go into IE, click teh gear/cog icon, select
Internet Options, Connections tab, Lan Settings button and see if the
Automatically Detect Settings is ticked (sometimes this is needed if
the HW guys know what they are doing but most small businesses dont
need this ticked) and in the proxy server settings see if anything is
written there.
If there are proxy settings wupdate can read those as they are stored
in the registry for other apps to detect.

Also worth mentioning if they have done a recent windows update its
worth rebooting before trying some other things as some windows update
stop functionality in parts of windows until its been rebooted.

Have they tried a simple reboot? I know some of my ex customers would
leave machines running for weeks if a windows update had not forced a
reboot and some things just stop working in those situs like being able
to cut and paste between apps. The reason is some internal windows
counters reach their limit and can only be reset by a reboot.

wupdate = WEB Update <g> And yes, I know how to do this, only this
machine is failing. I've got inquiries about this. For now its fine
since there is nothing critical this machine needs (like file structure
changes).

I havent looked at the Wupdate for years and I thought Friedrich was
doing some improvements so it could be used to update from a central
server folder location not just from the web, hence what I said.

Found the problem. The network admin discovered that this user didn't
have sufficient rights to perform software updates. Did a little
tweaking and now she does.
