View Full Version : WARNING: Fraudulent Transactions and Keygen
NewsArchive
03-28-2014, 05:26 AM
Hi,
at the moment, we are under heavy fraudulent purchase attack and two warez
groups have released "keygens" for SetupBuilder. Well, I don't know why <g>
but some users have downloaded and launched the "keygen.exe" and of course,
their system is toast now because the programs are virus infected. What a
surprise!
So please, instead of using a malicious keygen.exe from the dark side of the
Internet, please contact our Sales at sales@lindersoft.com if your
SetupBuilder maintenance and support subscription plan expired or if you
would like to license a new version of SetupBuilder.
And no, I don't know how to remove the keygen.exe virus from the system.

I would like to cut their testicles off using a blunted bread knife. These
fraudulent purchase orders are a support nightmare right now.
And on top of this there are crazy people calling because they tried to
steal our product with a virus-infected tool from various Warez sites and
now their computer is toast. But instead of shutting their mouth they are
asking me for help? WTF? I did not develop the tools (keygen.exe) that
claim to generate serial numbers and licenses for SetupBuilder. I have a
family to feed...I have a business to run. What are these guys smoking?
They shouldn't use a keygen.exe that sends their computers to hell but
instead use their own credit card to buy a license. Oh boy, where are my
pills?

I think you would be well served if you home page had a small blurb in
red letters about this attack and warning potential customers.
Something like:
Using keygen? Please click here for important information!
Then a page from the above link explaining how dangerous it is to use
such devices/programs and you don't publish nor condone such practices.
You'd at least be covering your side in case someone decides to not
listen to reason and get "uppity".

OTOH you are "seeding" an idea to go and look for a keygen into the minds
of some people that never realized one might exist if you do that.

Sure Russ.
The point is - WHY put the idea in someone's head that things like Keygen's
even exist?
A lot of developers are blissfully unaware of such things and happily pay
for developer tools instead of being tempted to get something for nothing.

Charles,

And even still, without the knowledge, software is pirated.
Knowing it's out there does not invite use and not knowing does not
prevent piracy.
Honesty is honesty and those that are, are. In contrast those that
aren't probably rarely, if ever, are.
I used to routinely search the Internet for the internal key that
makes by unlocks work. That's the part that doesn't change except from
version to version. On the rare occasion that I've found that data
I've also found the public key bits that are needed for its use. THOSE
I look up in my database and now I know the apparent purchaser of the
software.
That said I rarely ever do those searches any longer preferring the
way I feel without the worry and stress. You can't prevent theft but
you can slow it and also not let it worry you - life is too short!<g>

No more than putting a sign in your yard saying that there are no firearms

I agree.
But there is still no good reason to put something out that only attracts
turd flies...

We do some similar things.

No argument there.
But that still does not make me want to even put the idea of keygens out
there.
There are developers who get into a bind once and a while and might "bend"
the rules (fully intending on buying a legit copy after they build the next
great software and get rich).
A person like that might not even be aware of the dangers of downloading
keygens or unlocked copies, so IMHO it would be irresponsible of me to even
lead them into temptation a little bit.
At the end of the day, I just don't see a legit reason to advertise that a
keygen for a product even exists. It only helps (and elevates the status
of) the bad guys.
Just my $.02

Indeed.
Things like there are times when you should just take your (self inflicted)
lump quietly and let it go ... but you don't<g>.
Once again I bow to your expertise and have noted for the record your
ongoing example of self-abuse.
Have you ever considered moving to Colorado?
At least there whatever it is your smoking would be legal<g>.
