I am using "Symantec Endpoint Protection" now. I have tested it for more
than 9 months on another machine.

Does it work flawlessly? Well, it's a protection software product ("the
devil") so the answer is "No..." <g> But it works.

What happened? Well, after installation, my new Symantec protection was so
smart that it deteced the Windows Genuine Validation component as a
virus/malware (false-positive) and put it into quarantine. As a result,
Windows locked me out from my own computer (main development machine). I
had to call a Microsoft telephone number to re-activate Windows. Did that
work? No, of course not. The Windows validation key was wrong because the
component that generates the key was in quarantine. Catch22. And the best
is, Microsoft told me that I am using pirated software. HUH? I have a MSDN
subscription for ages, so this Windows version is definitely NOT pirated <g>

What did I do to solve this problem? I have learned my lesson and I am
working exclusively in virtual machine environments. I can simply restart
the VM (or restore from the VM backups) and I am back in business. Yeah!

But it took 10+ hours to find out why this damn generated validation key was
wrong. Neither Symantec nor Microsoft had an idea <g>. Just exclude the
Windows Genuine Validation component from real-time scanning and reboot.
Bingo. But you have to do this BEFORE Microsoft and Symantec lock you out.

My suggestion: VMs are your best friend. Drive "C:" is for software, Drive
"D:", "E:", etc. are for data. Never store your data on "C:". Then you are
safe. I have separate virtual drives and can backup my stuff in minutes. I
can even use the same virtual drives on my Dell development machine using
VMWare Workstation and on my high-performance MacBook Pro Retina running
Fusion 7.

Yes, I love VMs. 8 years ago I would have been in serious trouble with
this.

I hate *all* AV software products. I have tested quite a few AV systems in
the last few months. At the moment, Symantec EP is my "favorite" on.

Do any of those things actually work? I'm actually using Avast and it
seems to work for me. But I have had virus/malware/spyware infections
crop up in the past and it seems that NONE of those so called
virus/malware removal software can deal with viruses once they have
infected files. They may be ok protecting from infection, but so far I
haven't found any that can actually remove viruses after the fact. When
that has happened the drives are taken out and put gently on a hard
surface and then I take the sledgehammer and... Wham! <g> Takes care
of them damn viruses, that's for sure!<bg>

Best results I've had is to pick one product that overall is generally
pretty good. But you can't stop there. Have at least two other
specialized products, any of these should also make you an emergency
boot CD.

In my case, I went with ESET (don't shoot Friedrich! <g>). Its actually
pretty decent and has free on-line scanners. The other "specialized"
product is MS Defender - its actually pretty good, but its limited in
its abilities.

But I've found I need yet another, so after reading an article about
restoring your computer's performance, I ran into Malware Bytes. Its a
free scanner and cleaner, but it only looks for specific threats, yet
another specialist. And it found a few the others did not, one of which
was quite serious. It fixed the problem I was having with some of my
software.

So you have the general tool that pretty much looks for trouble (and
they all cry "Wolf!" once in a while) and can usually prevent and/or fix
issues reliably. But the major weakness in all of these products is
they try to do too much and find all threats. But they can't - thus
false positives.

This is why you need secondary products that specialize in certain
threats. More than one, and you run their scans like once a month (I do
this after the monthly MS update).

I've found these combinations to be the most reliable. That and some
common horse sense! <g>

I have used both AVG and Malwarebytes. Haven't used Online Armor. AVG
and Malwarebytes both have the problems I have described. I have
experienced stuff come through with both of them but I didn't use them
together. I have had the same experience with McAfee, F-Prot and couple
of others I have tried hard to forget, oh, yes Kaspersky was one of
them. Useful until you get infected and then they seem to become
useless. Maybe I visit sites that are riskier than others<g>

Oh interesting. You put me onto Avast and been using it (fingers crossed)
successfully ever since. McAffee was hopeless and heard terrible things
about Symantec.

I do use VM's but only for testing software really. Never had (again fingers
very much crossed) issues with Avast and Miscrosoft stuff as you describe.

Just wondered why you found Avast such a devil in the end.

Update: unfortunately, the "nightmare" is still not over. It was definitely
not a good idea to use Symantec Endpoint Protection on development machines.
Sometimes, memory usage is 1.5 GB just for the protection processes.
Symantec uninstall is scheduled for this coming weekend :-( Russ, I will
follow you and try ESET <g> ;-)

I too am a supporter of ESET. I have run it for quite a number of years
with no issues whatsoever. It simply sits quietly, out of the way, and
does its job. I currently use their "Smart Security" package.

It seems to have stopped everything that has been thrown at it and I
(knock on wood) have never been hit with a virus.

The new avast! version slowed down my development machines. So I went
back to the previous fast version (with virus definition always up-to date)
and auto-update DISABLED. But last week, avast! decided to update my
computer without my permission! Suddenly, my computer downloaded 100+ MB,
installed something behind-the-scenes, and displayed a reboot message.
Brand new avast! installed. WOW. The next morning it turned out that the
new avast! was monitoring my email system and moved order and support emails
into the Spam folder. Enough was enough <g>

for me ESET was not bad at all just too much machine ressources used
when applying the "live" mode to scan on access .... thus my change
back to SOPHOS which is perfect for me.

I have reported the issue several times to avast but no solution available.
So the only possible workaround for me was to use the previous avast
version. Until the "forced update".

I never thought I would say this, but I am more than impressed by ESET. The
machines are faster than ever before. I'll switch all machines to ESET later
this month. Using Symantec on development machines was a very bad idea and a
waste of time.

Interesting reading! IMO, computing is not fun anymore...

I am still a big ESET supporter. It even works on my Windows XP development
VM without any problem. And of course, on my "modern" development VMs
(running Windows 10 and Windows 7).

At the moment, ESET NOD32 is my #1.
