Hi All
I am about to try my hand at code signing with Comodo.
How do I make sure that the WHOIS database for our domain is up-to-date
and turn OFF domain registrar's privacy service? We do not look after
this domain. It is outsourced.
Cheers

Andre,
If the domain in question is the one in the email you use here, it would
appear not to be shrouded:

Hi Jane
That would be it. But I ask you - what does this all mean and why is it
necessary? I am trying to get my head around what I am actually trying
to achieve here.

The phone number and email contact for the domain are part of the
system used to validate the authenticity of the certificate request.

They want to make sure that your info jibes. That you're not some
yahoo doing bad stuff. The domain admin will probably get some emails
that need attention too.

Hi Lee
I have just realized that. And right now I am sitting with pretty
outdated data. Phone numbers and physical address have changed - we
have moved offices. Trying to get hold of our service provider to get
them to change that.

If everything is up to date the process can be fairly painless and
quick but if things aren't current, well, it gets PAINFUL!<g>
Just follow the steps outlined by our resident guru, Jane, and it can
be handled quickly.

Andre,
And if the budget allows get a 3 year certificate or you'll have to go
through this painful process next year. Unlike certs for you website
that can simply be renewed, code signing certs require the entire
process each time.

Hi Lee
Just got hold of data support. Office only open Monday to Friday but I
have a direct number that will get the data in that record current. It
would have snookered us for sure. I see how it works now. Makes
perfect sense.
I have had a very good look at Jane's document - excellent stuff.

Andre,
Here's a suggestion, can't recall if it's in Jane's docs or not, use
the domain admin email address, which should match the domain, for all
correspondence when ordering your certificate.

Definitely going for three years. I am too old to go through this every
year. It is enough having to simply renew all the Apple certificates
and then generate them for 30 [and growing] different mobile apps every
year.

You would be correct. And we will do that. We learned this lesson when
ordering certificates for IIS for our clients. Comodo always sends to
admin@ as a default. They just assume......

Hi Jeff
Understood. We have always left this to our service provider. I am
going to contact them on Monday to make sure that these details are ALL
correct, including theirs. This record entry goes back to 1998 and we
have told these folk countless times to change the data. If I have to
go over there on Monday with a shotgun I will.

Andre,
I learned a lesson years ago. I think it was a domain I had hosted on
yahoo. I wanted to move it, and had to jump through hoops with a registrar
in Australia.
Since then, I've kept my domain registrations separate from my hosting
provider.
I use hover.com, but there are others. I log into that account to do
whatever I want with the registrations. And if I change hosting provider
for a domain, I just log into the registration account and point the DNS
listings at the new people.

Hi Jane
You are 100% correct. At the moment it is not possible to move it.
They have currently got us by the Billy Bush. As soon as we are able to
we will move it and do as you have done. For the moment we are
dependent on them. But nothing that a visit to their physical offices
and a shotgun cannot resolve. If they do not sort this out over the
phone and immediately on Monday they will be getting a visit from me.

I got a 3 year certificate recently and it was actually fairly painless.
The Dun & Bradstreet was out of date, but I updated it and got a call
from them couple of weeks later verifying the update. I ordered the
certificate at 10:06 AM November 10th and received it by 1:21PM on
November 12th. One email with info on the D&B thing and a phone
callback and that was it. I was quite surprised how easy it was! But I
have done this a few times before so I had my fingers crossed, knocked
on wood, and all that nonsense beforehand;)
Best regards,
