Hello all & Friedrich,

in my program I have a self-update function built in. The client downloads a ZIP to:

C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Temp\

then unzips it. This ZIP contains an EXE, which performs the update itself. It
works fine... here.

My question now is: Do I have to expect that the client machines will be
prohibited to run EXE in C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Temp\ or is it safe to do
the way I described?

Peter Hermanssen has inthe meanwhile mentioned, that some Anti-Virus-programs
might block execution of binaries in that location.

So my question to the jury, would

WE::CSIDL_APPDATA equate(01Ah) ! C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application
Data & \ MyProgram\Update

be a better one?

Hi Wolfgang,

IMO, it is safe to use the "C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Temp" folder
location. Quite a few applications are using this Temp folder, including
SetupBuilder installers (we create our own sub-folder).

From my experience, the false-positive risk is not higher in the Temp
folder. Just make sure the .exe is code-signed with a trusted certificate.

Sure! And right now I got my new one. It was a very easy process this time.

What makes me wonder is that Comodo still offers SHA-1 certificates.

Anyway, I will export it from FireFox now and see, whether it all works.

Acronis unzips the whole mess in there and runs the installer. Leaves
it there, all 500MB+, if it gets pissed off, which it usually does<g>
That has got to be the most finicky software there is out there!!!

If you're talking about True Image 2016, it is the reason that I
switched to Macrium Reflect after many many years as a happy Acronis
customer. I returned the software for a refund.

It is a terrible program. The design is bad. The features that I used
to love are missing.

On my Win 8.1 workstation, I still have True Image 2013. It's fine.

Yes ATI! 2016 was a breeze compared to 2017 and 2017 was a breeze
compared to 2018!!!!!!!

I will investigate Macrium immediately! I had searched but never found
anything other than Acronis for image backups, but I must not have used
the right search terms!

Downloading Macrium! 870MB! What the heck do they put into those
programs! Acronis with all it's bloating is only about 560MB! <g>
