I remember somebody giving it a shot, but don't recall how that went.

Is a personal code signing certificate even possible nowadays, or is a
company required?

No personal experience, Jeff.
But when I did mine with my business name in January, I noticed that
"individual validation" appears to be an option:

If you download MP3Tag, for example, the digital signature is for an
individual. https://www.mp3tag.de/en/dodownload64.html
The certificate was issued in 9/2021.

I'm sure I've come across others.

I did one the last time I was up for renewal just to find out.

It was painless compared to the normal company certificates in regards to
what you need to validate yourself during the process.

It works just like any other certificate with regards to how you use it.

I plan on renewing it again in a three year version.

As far as I know they still offer it.

BTW - verification was as simple as taking two photos and sending them in.

One was a close up of your drivers license (with a photo).

The other was a photo taken of you holding it up next to your head (at full
resolution).

This enables them to see your details AND confirm that you are the person
in the photo easily.

Just had to do that for Sectigo along with sending them docs to verify
the address, which they couldn't find. We'll see how it goes!

Best regards,
