Support for the Windows Firewall

Charles asked me what the status of the SetupBuilder built-in Windows
Firewall support is. The ability to add a program that will be allowed to
communicate through Windows Firewall could be really useful to install his
wonderful PageSnip product.

We have already developed the functionality to add/remove programs and to
add/remove ports. Functions to check the status of the firewall are also
available. We have tested it on XP (including SP3), Vista (including
Ultimate 64-bit) and the latest Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition
release candidate.

We'll make this built-in feature available soon.

Awesome!! Very usefull in my world.

Right now i have to manually add firewall entries for VNC. That would help
ALOT.

Any way to set a computers static IP/DNS address using SB?

I checked this and we have done it for a consulting SetupBuilder project
last year. What exactly do you have to do?

Each of our installs requires us to set a static IP address of the
workstation. Its not a BIG step to set it manually, but my hope is to create
a setup script that goes thru 100% of doing an install (i.e. install
software, set firewall settings, share folders, set static IP address of
computer).

With the ability to set firewall settings, AND if the ability was there to
set static IP addresses, my installs could be done by drunken monkeys (a
term i just introduced to my distrubtion company).

Not really.

The installer is already running in elevated status as Administrator so the
user has already given away the keys to the kingdom.

Adding the entry to the firewall is just a (much needed) convenience
factor.

Nothing worse than having a computer dummy say "No" to the "Allow this
program to access the Internet" question and then have to walk them through
how to correct it after you get that whiny "your program is not working!"
E-mail...
