View Full Version : FTP to Web

With SB4 you could ftp the completed compile to a web site. I can't seem to
find this option in SB5.

Don,
SB5 does not support FTP. You can now use #run (Process after script
compilation) directive to call your favorite FTP tool.

This is interesting. While I completely understand that FTP is not supported
in generated installation programs (wupdate), it's a bit surprising
that SB5 IDE does not support it neither.
After all, I believe most people use FTP to upload installation files to
web server.

Timo,
I think most people use their own (favorite) FTP clients. Firewalls, proxy
servers, etc. can cause big trouble for FTP software.

By the way, don't get me wrong. We develop SetupBuilder for you! So if you
are interested in a FTP feature to (automatically) upload files to your web
server, we can submit this feature to our suggestion database. If there is
enough interest, we'll add it :)

Actually Friedrich, it is not a very important feature in my view. Was just
curious that I missed it in the docs. You are quite right that there are a
myriad of programs that easily performs this task.

Yes, you are right. I have spent most of the day today resolving FTP issues
at one of my client.
But I just like all handy functionality, like FTP directly from app.
Ie., I'm using EditPlus editor to maintain some HTML code on WEB servers,
and I like the feature to upload files directly from this excellent editor.
Maybe it's just that you have managed to spoil us with all goodies in SB5.

I must say that I found it quite useful to just update the web server after
I had compiled the setup. I for one would like to see the feature retained
(re-introduced).

Oh.. bad move Friedrich... You've broken the cardinal rule of software
development... Remove no feature from your previous versions... Knowing this
is gone will certainly keep me from upgrading to SetupBuilder 5.

1 feature left out, 5,000,000 added.
Easy decision.

I was only being half serious... of course I'll upgrade... but breaking this
rule is one sure way to piss off customers. I've done it in my own software
(because I made an assumption that nobody used a particular functionality)
and my customers screamed long and loud until I re-implemented it.

The FTP feature is on my wish list now. I think we'll have the FTP
functionality back in one of the next builds.

Hi Friedrich

There is nothing wrong with adding a call at the end of a scrip to run
your own FTP program - anyone can do that<g> Personally I like to
know exactly what is happening and I use Total Commander for all my
FTP use (and all other file stuff for that matter).

Hi Jeff,
>I assume that's better than 7/8 Commander
Total Commander was called Windows Commander until about a year ago
when they were forced to change the name. Their website is at
http://www.ghisler.com/
It has built in FTP, ZIP/UNZIP, file compare, thumbnail view and of
course double pane file explorer.

Arnor -
Cool. Does it suport secure ftp? If it doesn't then it wouldn't be
much use for me.
I've been using FTP Voyager secure edition. It's pretty nice, but
takes a long time to initialize the local folder view for some reason.
Thanks.

Hi Jeff,
>Cool. Does it suport secure ftp? If it doesn't then it wouldn't be
>much use for me.
I have never had use for SFTP so I couldn't say if it supports it or
not. However, the website says:
http://www.ghisler.com/efaqftp.htm
Q: Why doesn't Total Commander support a connection by SSH?
A: Unfortunately we cannot support any encryption in Total Commander
because of the current patent and crypto export situation.
However, there is now a new file system plugin for Total Commander,
which supports SFTP. SFTP is FTP via SSH. It needs SSH2, which is now
supported by almost all new Linux and other Unix distributions.
Total Commander is made in Switzerland which I suspect falls under an
agreement between EU and USA in regards to export of encryption codes
from 1999. Essentially it prevents EU countries from freely exporting
software that contains more than 64bit encryption (if I remember this
correctly)
