Setup Summary

Hi Friedrich,

Not sure about your other users but I have many SB6 files and for the
enduring documentation of our system I keep a large notebook describing all
about how our software on the hard disk.

It would be nice if we could press a button and have a full summary of the
SB6 file because there are LOTS of settings that do not appear in the
script. If the SB6 file were to be lost it would take much effort to
recreate it.

A large notebook, Mike? You can get 200GB drives on fairly small notebooks
now.

Personally, I find it easiest to back up the SB6 files with whatever else
I'd need to recreate a project. I use an old command-line version of PKZIP
to do it.

I stick a batch file in a project's folder with just a variable for the zip
file name. So I'll run it as
BU May04C
then I'll copy May04C to a USB drive or a hard drive on a networked machine,
or occasionally after encrypting to a hidden folder on my web server.

There are even two built-in zip functions available to do this ;-)

Hmm, interesting question <g>. I checked the source code and it was already
a SetupBuilder 5 feature (implemented three years ago <g>).

Do you have suggestions on how the full summary should look like?

IMO, most settings required to recreate a project appear in the script. Do
you have an example where this is not the case (except for the dialogs)?

Of course, you're getting great advice from Friedrich and others how to
address this concern of yours - but I have this suggestion:

For a variety of reasons, backup programs/methods tend to impede one's
abilities to keep vital information backed up AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

However, I have found the combination of InBack and a Jump Drive (USB Flash
drive) can be a great way to quickly and selectively back up VITAL projects
such as SB files, Clarion apps/dct, etc on a much more regular basis as you
develop these files - even set a timer to remind you, it's time to back up
what you're working on.

another PC and a 1TB NAS server. Paranoia will destroya:)

I use Second Copy 2000 to copy to a local drive. That drive is copied
with InSync every night to a removable drive that I switch out
regularly. I use the Build Automator to make backups of projects I'm
working on and dump them to both separate backup destinations and the
CD burn folder on XP so I can backup and burn CD backup in one go:)

The best way to backup SetupBuilder projects is to use Carbonite. Backup is
immediate, and completely transparent to the user. And... off site and
available to restore at a moment's notice.

I tried it. It kept boinking my Vista Sp1 machine. Had to uninstall it. I
like the idea tho.

If you're not already using a version-control mechanism on your source, I'd
advise starting to, and treat the .sb6 file as yet another source code file.

We use Subversion (and TortoiseSVN), and the source code repository is backed
up to another (off-site) computer nightly.
