Wupdate launched each time SetupBuilder starts

Hi, Friedrich.
I'm using Vista 64 now, and noted that each time I start SetupBuilder
Version: 6.9.2309 it asks for permission to run wupdate.exe. I set in the
Tool/Options "Web Update" Tab to "check Once every week", why is this
executing on each start?

Yes, it's also getting on my nerves. But there is no way around this in
SB6. wupdate.exe (requireAdministrator execution level app) does the "check
for software updates" interval calculation. It does not connect to the
Internet in your case, but it handles the interval calculation.

What you can do is to set "Tools" -> "Options" -> "Web Update" -> "Check for
software updates" to "Never".

We are working on a web update solution for SB7 that does not need
administrator execution level privileges.

Ok, I understand now. Then sorry if this is a stupid question, but then why
not checking the period in the main SB exe, and call wupdate when really
needed?

Well, because not all users are interested in developing their own web
update check interval method (e.g. every day, all 7 days, all 14 day, etc.).
In SetupBuilder, they just enter a value in the "Check Interval (days)" Web
Update configuration and wupdate.exe handles interval checking
automatically.

And quite a few users execute wupdate.exe at (Windows) system startup or as
a Scheduled Task. In this case, there is not even an application running to
do the interval calculation for wupdate.exe. Or another example, how to
handle interval checking if wupdate.exe is started from a Shortcut ;-)

This interval checking is a built-in web update feature! You only get an
elevation prompt on Vista. On all other Windows operation systems it's
completely silent.

A bit, but not totally. Ok, WUpdate have this built in; but then again, why
can't you duplicate this feature in the main exe, thus calling wupdate only
when needed? i.e. wupdate would be the same for all these you mentioned;
but the SB exe would call it only when the period is due, so it is not
asking for elevation on each call. I don't see the problem.

Just tried to explain why the Vista/2008 elevation prompt appears when
SetupBuilder starts :)

We have changed it in SB6 and SB7. The SetupBuilder IDE handles the check
interval verification now and does not call wupdate.exe to do it.

This change will be available in the next SB6 maintenance build.
